Description The trucking industry relies on an efficient roadway network to pick up goods from and deliver goods to their customers. However, recurring or non-recurring traffic congestion, weather conditions, work zones, or other factors reduce or could reduce the efficiency of the roadway network. Because truck carriers often make time-sensitive deliveries that are required to occur within a certain delivery window, obtaining information about roadway network conditions when the network is operating at less than 100% efficiency is often a critical need for truck carriers. Both the public and private sector can provide valuable traveler information resources for the trucking industry. This webinar will provide information on the kinds of traveler information needs and sources different carriers in the trucking industry rely on, and also provide information on a state Department of Transportation's truck traveler information efforts.

·         State Department of Transportation perspective:
This presentation will focus on the Idaho Department of Transportation's efforts to provide traveler information to truck carriers that is timely, useful, and reliable. Information about how the information is disseminated will be provided.

·         Large truck carrier perspective:
This presentation will focus on how a large truck carrier obtains roadway network information. They obtain some information via publicly-available means, but also are able to obtain information by leveraging private resources to optimize their route planning when roadway network efficiency is reduced.

·         Small truck carrier perspective:
This presentation will focus on how a small truck carrier obtains roadway network information. Because smaller carriers do not have as many resources as large carriers, they are more reliant on publicly-available information, but they can also rely on other private information sources to be aware of current roadway network conditions.
