Due to a saltwater drip from the wet exhaust, the motor for my Simrad RPU-80 pump has become very rusty. While still operational, its just a matter of time. I have no need to replace the entire pump and motor at a cost of close to $1,000. I only need the fractional DC motor only.

Motor is made by Fracmo (UK), but I am unable to locate the motor only here in the US. I have only found the RPU-80 pump assembly at the high cost. Can anyone suggest a path to the replacement of the motor only.

Thanks,

Tim,

I would first see if someone might be able to rewind and clean it up...

IThen, if I had no luck on ebay, amazon, and amazon.uk, I would call
the company in UK, pay with your credit card, and have it air
freighted in.

If the cost approaches 1000, I would just buy the assembly...

There are two issues in replacing the motor. I know of no one who has
pulled the pump off the motor. There may be some difficulty, trick or
special tools needed.
The second is find a replacement motor. It so happens that the same pump
is used on all the RPU units from 80 - 300 cubic inch per minute, as I
recall. The only difference is the larger motor.

Ah, ha you say.

I can just get bigger motor and I will have more power and faster
steering. But, the bigger motor will draw more amperage and the control
box that runs the motor may not be able to handle any arbitrary increase
in amperage. There have been several control boxes with different power
ratings used in these autopilot systems.

As for the motor, I recall that my research indicated that other motors
had been used, and that there were documented substitute motors that
could be used.

Perhaps there is another tinkerer on the forum who has actually worked
this problem.

There is much to consider, said the spider to the fly.

Regards,
Mike

I just did this myself. It's easy.

motor, for autopilot pump
RPU-80 Simrad 44170199 elec-unlimited.com
242.00 (Lemac 65178-645, 12v, 45w, 2000 rpm,)
seal, motor shaft, for autopilot pump
RPU-80 Simrad 44149722 elec-unlimited.com 8.00

The Fracmo is the 'old' motor, so you'd be 'upgrading' as well.

If your system was installed properly, there are valves right near
the pump to close when you pull the motor. If not, expect to
drain, refill, and purge the system (which you of course do every
couple of years anyway, right?)
