Hi all, I'm looking for info from owners of 20 HP Honda, Yamaha and Tohatsu outboards with power tilt/trim. My current Tohatsu has a manual shallow water tilt up setting that I find indispensable for exploring skinny waters. I'm looking to replace my old 2 stroke with a new four stroke with power tilt. Does anyone have any experience with trimming these engines up for shallow water use? Can I expect the same type of trim and tilt that common with a stern drive. Can you trim at high speed for adjusting bow angle? The info I've found so far online is vague or non existent.

Thanks for your help.

Roly, I have been using a 30 up Honda on my 11' Caribe RIB center console
for 7 years. The power tilt&trim makes skinny water exploration a breeze.
Trimming at speed is no problem. I did add a lift fin to the anti
cavitation plate which makes that little boat pop on top without having to
trim all the way down each time I come off plane.

I replaced my 4 strokeTohatsu 20 with a Honda 20 2 years ago. (AB Inflatables Navigo 10.6 RIB...both engines equipped with power tilt/trim)
The Tohatsu permitted my boat to be properly trimmed at all speeds. The Honda's mounting angle and range of motion did not. I solved the problem by installing cast wedges on the outboard side of the transom. I wish I had purchased another Tohatsu.

Thanks for your response Craig, you real life experience is exactly what I was looking for. Interestingly, the info that I was able to obtain online, the Honda was the only motor that listed power tilt and trim. All others only list power tilt.

I replaced a 9.8 4-stroke Tohatsu with a Honda 15 with power tilt and trim. However, I can only trim it at low speeds or neutral, not at cruising. The range of angle of the Honda is also not as good as the Tohatsu. I too had to use a wedge in the engine mount to correct it.

Another thing that is not Honda's fault, but that purchasers should be aware of, is how well the engine mount fits the boat transom. I can tell you that the Honda 15 with power tilt and trim is not a good fit for the Livingston dinghies because of the tunnel in the Livingstons. The engine mount for this little Honda 15 is huge, and it comes down and obstruct the tunnel. I had to do hull modification that mitigated the problem, but did not entirely solve the obstruction problem.

As to how important the tilting is to exploring shallows, I think it is a nice feature. I carry a Hawkeye portable depth sounder in the dinghy and slow down and tilt up the engine when necessary. Another way to know it is time to tilt the engine up is when you see a trail of muddy water behind you. It tells you that you are running in just a foot of water.

I have a Yamaha 40hp on my 12' Nouvarania RIB, only because it was the smallest outboard Yamaha made in 2001 that had T&T, which we needed because we have dogs which need to go ashore and a push button makes going in and out of the beach much easier. It also makes a big difference in the performance being able to trim up on a plane. 40hp is gross overkill but it does plane with six or seven adults with no problem.

The T&T went out a few years ago and instead of paying Yamaha almost 2K for new, I took it off and put on an aftermarket unit, http://www.cmcmarineproducts.com/products/Outboard-Tilt-and-Trim/CMC-Tilt-and-Trim/CMC-PT-35-Tilt-and-Trim-for-up-to-35-HP. I used the model for up to 130hp because I hadn't seen the units close up, but would now use the smaller unit as the build quality is very good and very robust.

Now that I have a T&T unit I will downsize to a Yamaha 20hp, which the combined weight of engine and T&T unit will be equal to or less than the 40.
