Subject-Gluing on a Hypalon AB Inflatable

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am looking for some useful information on gluing onto my 6 year old AB Hypalon inflatable. 5 years ago I ordered a registration numbers plaque from boatnumbers.com. I glued it onto my dinghy with a one part contact style adhesive designed for hypalon. The sun eventually destroyed the plaque and boat numbers sent me a new one free saying they had improved its UV resistance. I have managed to get the old plaques off using a heat gun with no apparent damage to the dinghy. The bond failed some between the glue and the plaque and some between the glue itself. Most of the glue remains on the boat.

My questions are twofold-
1-Can anyone offer any advice how to clean this up without damaging the boat?

2-Can anyone offer a suggestion on what to use to glue the new paques on recognizing they will likely need to be removed and replaced in the future?

HAd I to do it all over again I would have chosen a different option but I am now stuck with dealing with my past actions. One thing I am considering is using industrial strength stickon velcro

ANyhow, any knowledgeable input would be appreciated.

I have been using 5200 for the Weaver Davits that support the whole weight of the dinghy and to reglue the bumper strip. It holds better than the special two part hypalon glue, but it gets all over everything. It likes two days before you hang the dinghy on it.

Over the years we have tried several different approaches to putting
numbers on our inflatable. We final settled on the Vinyl numbers we found
at WM. The are quite soft and flexible and seem to take the expansion and
contraction with no trouble.. We have had them on for 7 years now.

I had to remove contact cement from a dinghy recently and finally had to use a "pumice stone" paint remover on a power drill. Tube covers are popular here to protect the expensive tubes and the most efficient way to secure them is to use two inch velcro around the perimeter. Some other company had used contact cement which didn't hold the Velcro well, but stuck very well to the tubes. We were replacing the tube covers and had to clean off the contact cement on the tubes before we could adhere new Velcro. I tried all sorts of nasty chemicals as well as products like Goo-Gone and finally resorted to the pumice stone, which worked well but required a steady hand to keep from abrading the tubes.

We use adhesive backed Velcro (from Velcro!) and clean the two inch area with Toluene before adhering the Velcro. In the five years we've been using this method we've not had any come loose. You could probably use Velcro to adhere your plaques, making them easy to change.

'Lo All,

I sent this directly to Gary, but since there may be other interested...

I had to re-glue all the rubrails on my Avon. The company I bought the
two-part glue from is now out of business, but their advice on glue
removal worked very well. They instructed me to get a 60 grit sandpaper
flapper wheel and sand till the glue was gone. I started very gingerly,
but found that the flapper wheel, when not pressed hard against the
Hypalon only slightly abraded it, making it a perfect surface for
re-gluing. For permanent adhesion, use a two-part glue as the one part
glue is only for temporary repairs. But, it sounds like you really only
want a temporary attachment, so a one-part glue may work well for you. --

Take care and be safe.
