Just get a small battery charger, say 20a or so, and connect its AC
input to the generator's AC output using a suitable circuit breaker. If
your generator has a panel between the output and transfer gear, that's
the right place for the breaker, otherwise I would use an in-line model
inside the generator enclosure itself as near to the stator junction box
as practical.

I use a Victron product that converts AC to DC at a constant voltage.
I use a gel battery and so far , since 2011, the constant voltage seems to
have given a new meaning to the words on the case that say "long life."
