Good afternoon,

I am attempting to use my Verizon Jetpack MiFi hot spot in the Bahamas on BATELCO. Has anyone on the group successfully set one up?

I would appreciate any advise. I have the data plan and sim card from BATELCO.

Thanks,
Bill

Are you sure that your model Jetpack and BATELCO use the same radio technology?

Bill,

I could be mistaken, but I doubt if you'll have much success with the
Verizon hardware. Verizon uses CDMA technology, BaTelCo is GSM, so
AFAIK, the sim card you have from BaTelCo won't be recognized by the
Verizon hardware, the technologies are incompatible.

If you have a GSM device, you may be able to use the BaTelCo sim card,
but in most cases, the hardware is locked to the provider, so the
hardware won't recognize the alternate provider's sim card unless the
hardware is unlocked. Most providers are unwilling or uncooperative at
best when it comes to unlocking the hardware because the cost of the
hardware is subsidized in part by service contracts locking you into the
provider.

I hope you're not using your Verizon cell phone in the Bahamas at
$1.99/min. or whatever the outrageous roaming rate Verizon gets now. For
cell service, buy a cheap phone and a sim card from Batelco and just buy
minutes as you need them.

I could be in error, others on the list may have more current
information, but that's the latest I was aware of.

best of luck getting connected.

Bill,

You should no problem if you have the original SIM card. As you may know,
there are now four sizes of SIM cards and I'm not sure which types of cards
you can get from BATELCO. From what I know of the Verizon Jetpack MiFi, it
is a GSM device and utilizes a full-size SIM card. Parts of the Bahamas
even have LTE coverage now.

In the past, I have taken SIM card phones (GSM) to the Bahamas and
purchased SIM cards from the BATELCO office there, which you can fund as
required. You can even fund your card on their website, I believe.

Good luck,

Bob

The issue may be the status of the Jetpack. If it is "unlocked" then it
will work on non-Verizon systems. If not then it will show a security
error.

I have been able to call Verizon and have them give me the unlock code
to let the unit be used on non-Verizon system with a smart phone.

Make sure you tell them that you will put their sim card back in when
you return to the US.

Hi Steve,

I believe the Verizon Jetpack MiFi can operate on either CDMA or GSM, user
selectable. At least this one is:

Thanks,
Bob

Thank you. So far this has been frustrating, I’ll call Verizon and see if they will provide such a code, and be sure to say I was happy with service in the US and will restore the Sim card on return.

Kind of obvious since the BATELCO card will be useless.

Great idea.

THANK YOU to all the responders and their suggestions.

Thanks again,
Bill

If your Jetpack is GSM compatible and is unlocked, then it should be able to
use the BTC signal. If you can see the BTC signal on your device but get a
connection error 33, then try this. I found that when I tried to set up my
Sierra Wireless Aircard (unlocked and AT&T GSM compatible) I had to set up a
new profile on the Aircard. This involves going into the web page for the
device and then advanced settings, then WAN setup. Your setup will be
different, but you should be able to find the WAN setup. From there you
should be able to add a new profile. Go ahead and call it BTC or whatever
else you like. The key thing is the APN which I think stands for Access
Point name. It needs to be "internet.btcbahamas.com" (without the quotes).
Once you have saved that profile, and selected it for use, then you should
be in business. For more help you could google apn for btcbahamas.

Hope this helps.
