We changed ours from a Boat/US issued number to an FCC number when we
cruised in Canada for the first time. Had to send it in to the
manufacturer, but it was handled under warranty at no cost to us, other
than shipping!

I changed the MMSI in the Icom 506 that came with the boat I bought last
May - easy, within the menus.
You might be able to change it to 999999999 or some such.
