Oh the charm of Cary Grant even as a salty barnacled drunk mariner(Walter) who gets wrangled into the war as a look out by the great Trevor Howard(Frank). This is a light comedy even though it takes place during WW2 on the tiny islands in the south pacific. The young cast is cute and Leslie Caron(Catherine) is adorable as a school teacher that demands better etiquette from Walters lazy gruff persona. I don't know if I cared for how it ended but it was a fun Hollywood movie for those times when that's what you want.
Father Goose is the 1964 romantic comedy directed by Ralph Nelson. Based on the story A Place of Dragons the film stars Carey Grant and Leslie Caron when an American beach comber is forced onto a remote island as lookout he later comes across a French woman and seven school girls. The film won the best original screenplay Academy Award.
Misanthropic drunken loner (or as he is later referred to, "a rude, foul-mouthed, drunken, filthy beast."), Walter Eckland (Cary Grant), is reluctantly recruited by an Australian Navy Commander (Trevor Howard) to be a coast watcher for the Allies in the Pacific. Sent to a deserted island, Eckland watches for and reports on Japanese aircraft and vessels, with a copious supply of whiskey. While on whiskey reconnaissance on a neighbouring island, he encounters French-woman Catherine (Leslie Caron) and seven schoolgirls stranded on the island. He takes them back with him (reluctantly of course) and inevitably they turn his world upside down. While it seems to be all laughs, danger from the air and sea is never far away.
On an island in the South Seas, Walter Eckland (Cary Grant) is having a peaceful existence. That vicissitudes when he's influenced to help as a viewpoint for the Allies, keeping an eye out for rival boats.
