The blues is water to the parched, a lifeline to those adrift, rest for those who are weary, and nourishment for the weak. Those who only glance at this music mistake it for sadness. It is impossible to travel the entire road of blues music in one season. Cornflower blue is a shade of medium blue that contains very little pigments of green compared to other shades of blue. Sapphire gems that have a much higher value are referred to as cornflower blue, as they have a medium-dark bluish-violet tone to them.
However, with modern technology scientists have discovered that due to Egyptian blues properties of absorbing visible light, the color can prove useful in applications for construction materials that are designed to cool down rooftops or walls in particularly sunny climates.

There are a huge number of shades of blue, unsurprising since blue is the most popular color in much of the world. These include lighter varieties such as turquoise, powder blue, sky blue and periwinkle, and darker shades like ultramarine, navy blue, sapphire, midnight blue, and teal.

Appropriately enough, Madlib's multiple personality disorder creates the "shades of blue" the title refers to. On one hand, he stars as himself, semi-dutifully remixing Blue Note classics by Gene Harris & The Three Sounds, Donald Byrd, Ronnie Foster and Bobby Hutcherson into outsider works of downtempo and instrumental hip-hop art. With the exception of Bobbi Humphrey's "Please Set Me At Ease"-- which Madlib and guest emcee Medaphoar transform into Slum Village hip-hop-- there's nothing overtly radical about the remixes, but closer listening reveals strange happenings in their murky depths, as the role reversal of foregrounded breakbeat and buried melody on the disc's centerpiece "Stepping Into Tomorrow" illustrate exquisitely.
While clear seawater is blue, if particles are introduced to the water such as floating microscopic marine organisms (plankton) or silt and mud, it can be transformed shades of green, red, and brown. However, clear blue seawater does not indicate the absence of life: Blue ocean water is still a sea of life with submicroscopic picoplankton and marine viruses making a life in the chemical soup that is seawater.
Four years, and several compositions later, I finally took the opportunity to realize that need by composing Blue Shades. As its title suggests, the work alludes to the Blues, and a jazz feeling is prevalent -- however, it is in not literally a Blues piece. There is not a single 12-bar blues progression to be found, and except for a few isolated sections, the eighth-note is not swung.
The work, however, is heavily influenced by the Blues: "Blue notes" (flatted 3rds, 5ths, and 7ths) are used constantly; Blues harmonies, rhythms, and melodic idioms pervade the work; and many "shades of blue" are depicted, from bright blue, to dark, to dirty, to hot blue.
At times, Blue Shades burlesques some of the clichés from the Big Band era, not as a mockery of those conventions, but as a tribute. A slow and quiet middle section recalls the atmosphere of a dark, smoky blues haunt. An extended clarinet solo played near the end recalls Benny Goodman's hot playing style, and ushers in a series of "wailing" brass chords recalling the train whistle effects commonly used during that era.
Ears are 3-5" long. Several blends of blue shades including sky blue and violet blue. Plant in blocks of 4 rows or more. Plant when soil temperatures are 60F or above. Fertilize well. Harvest when husks are dried.
