Shiva is a 1990 Indian Telugu-language action drama film written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma. It was a remake of Varma's debut Telugu film, Siva (1989). The film has Nagarjuna (in his Hindi debut) and Amala in lead roles with Raghuvaran and J. D. Chakravarthy as the antagonists. All four actors reprise their roles from the original Telugu film. The film became a blockbuster.[1][2] The success led to Ram Gopal Varma directing a prequel in 2006 which has no connection to the original except similar name.[3]

The film opens to a classroom in a (fictional) VAS college of Arts & Sciences. After the classes, upon the directions of a college student JD, a bunch of goons led by Ganesh savagely assaults a group of students right outside the college gate. It's later made clear that JD was settling some campus scores and that the incident resulted in at least one student leaving the college, deepening the fear for JD in the campus.

It turns out that JD is the (unopposed) president of the college students' union and the leader of a notorious campus gang, powerful enough to prevent the college Principal from taking disciplinary actions against their unsavory conduct, which includes eve-teasing and insulting professors. JD's connections, through Ganesh, reaches a gangster named Bhavani Chaudhury, whose criminal network lends muscle to a local politician Tilak Dhari.

Shiva is a new student at college. He joins a small group of friends, including Prakash and Asha. Shiva's confident gait and tough attitude leads to JD locking horns with him. An inevitable fight ensues, in which Shiva and friends beat up JD's gang, in broad daylight within the campus. Emboldened by the incident, Shiva's friends plan to fight the students' union elections. Shiva proposes the nerdy friend Naresh to stand for the president-ship. He also rebuffs Ganesh's initial warning to stay out of politics.

When Ganesh attempts to use force, Shiva beats him back too. The matter comes before Bhavani. Bhavani is mildly annoyed, but he studies Shiva as a potential replacement for JD. At his behest, Naresh is assaulted and rendered unable to run. At this point, Shiva accepts the nomination and decides to run.

Meanwhile, Bhavani has other troubles. He refuses to side with a worker's union leader Krishna Rao. Krishna Rao takes his plight to Shiva; Shiva agrees to help in return for muscle, and Rao provides this by calling upon the workers. Around this time, Asha expresses a romantic interest in Shiva. The friendship progresses, and they eventually marry.

The stage is now set. Bhavani launches a set of sniper attacks on those close to Shiva. Shiva retaliates in kind and takes out many of Bhavani's leaders. Tilak Dhari notices that Shiva is launching a fitting response to Bhavani and decides to stop supporting Bhavani. Angered, humiliated and defeated, Bhavani strikes Shiva's home and finds Asha. When he learns that Ganesh has already been presented in court and an arrest warrant has been issued for him, Bhavani kills Asha, also Tilakdhari for betrayal and leaves.

A final fight ensues in which eventually, Shiva manages to kill Bhavani, ridding the city of one of its most terrifying anti-social elements, while personally coming to terms with the fact that he has lost almost everything in the bargain.

I made this first as a short film in university in my last year, and I was very lucky that that got into South by Southwest in 2018. Some students try to make something over-ambitious, and I originally wanted to do that. I wanted to do a dystopian thing and my professor gave me that age-old advice: Write what you know.

At that point, I had been away from my family for four years. And I had always wanted to do something at a shiva. I always found them to be contrasting and funny settings because someone just died, but it still feels like every other Jewish family function in that there is lots of complaining and bragging and asking nosy questions and, you know, crossing boundaries and talking about the details of your colonoscopy and things like that. To me, that felt like any other Reform Ashkenazi setting.

At the time, I was feeling also very anxious about my future and the contradicting pressures of being a nice Jewish girl with a very secure career ahead of you. And then also being a sexy, independent young woman who is an artist living her life in New York.

At the time, Transparent been out for a few years and I feel like Joey Soloway opened the door up for not just queer Jews but modern, nuanced [portrayals of] Jews who are semi-religious in a way that I feel only other Jews can relate to. There is nothing wrong with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or Curb Your Enthusiasm, but I just had never seen something so grounded.

You are the second Canadian Jew to tell me this. Thank God people are picking up on it, because Yentl was a reference for the movie visually and also, more people need to appreciate Mandy Patinkin in general.

[A moment which lives in my mind: Danielle, exhausted and anxious, desperately asks her mother if she is disappointed in her. Debbie reacts in disbelief, but her reassurances are cut off when they are interrupted by a request to help move some chairs.]

Vandana Shiva seems like someone who ought to have multiple movies about her at this point, but for now, The Seeds of Vandana Shiva will do. The septuagenarian activist is first shown in a field, taking a phone call, and then, via the magic of montage, rushing into action almost Batman-style to speak out against environmental injustice. Traimed in both science and philosophy, highly intelligent, and a devotee of both Einstein and Gandhi, Shiva has devoted her life to proving that longterm sustainability is ultimately more profitable than short term environmental pillaging, and continues to fight GMO foods and their availability in India.

Shiva narrates the film herself, frequently on camera, interspersed with key vintage footage and modern hi-definition camerawork that visually cherishes every dewdop. She notes how she was trained in atomic science but never once taught about the dangers of radiation, and once she learned, vowed not to separate cause and effect like that again, which led to her interest in quantam entanglement. Disagree with her if you will, but she is almost certainly smarter than you. (Hence the lack of U.S. TV time, again.)

It is 1991 in the midst of the first Gulf War and Israel is under daily missile attacks. But in the Ohayon family, tragedy has hit in more mundane circumstances as beloved Maurice, one of nine brothers and sisters, has suddenly died. The family gathers for the traditional seven days of mourning (shiva) in which they are not allowed to leave the house. The intensity of this situation is a catalyst for more than just emotional support and communal grief. Jealousy, gossip, long term rivalry and financial problems come to the fore, as each of the siblings is faced with their frustrated ambitions.

Seligman: Yes, I did. I was really intent on keeping Rachel from the short to the feature. I learned through this process this is not something that happens frequently. Usually, roles are recast with someone who is more recognizable or who has more credits. Everyone supported me in the vision because Rachel really made the short what it was. Originally, the short was supposed to be much more dramatic before she came onboard. Rachel just put her own stamp on it. There was no way we were going to do it without her.

Altmann: Not only were we on-set we essentially lived on set during the shoot. The room we were living in was also the room we used for wardrobe and hair and make-up and it served as the production office as well. We had a pull out bed that Katie and I slept on every night during filming. It was a way to minimize securing the film gear every night while maximizing getting the greatest amount of sleep possible.
