I have partially solved my surging shore power problem.  The shore power transfer switch had failed.  Replaced both shore power and generator transfer switches and the electrical board.  Generator powers up as it should, charger and inverter work fine, but still getting a power fluctuation on shore power.  There is a snapping noise coming from the shore power reel (Shoreline RV 5036 01): an electrician believes the brushes are shot and the power fluctuation is what caused the transfer switch to burn out.  TRC no longer repairs this unit.  I found a place that has new brushes (Helwig Carbon Products), but the reel is riveted together and TRC tells me it cannot be repaired. Has anyone ever replace the brushes on their power reel.  If so, would appreciate your counsel on the procedure you used.  A new Reel is just short of $500...brushes around $15.00 each.

Thanx.

I recall reading in a forum the rivets were installed using jigs to hold the reel together and putting it together after un-riveting was not possible.  Nothing to lose by trying and if you succeed, you saved 500.

I just recently had that same problem. My transfer switches didn't blow out, but I had to position the reel very carefully in order to get good power to the switches. You are right, they do not repair these units. I had to buy a new one. If you can get the brushes replaced, I would try that route first.

Thanx.  I'm going to try to replace the brushes.  Will let U know how I make out.  Where did U get your new reel?

I use Trailers of the East Coast in Mocksville, NC.  Expensive, but good.  Guarantee their work, too.

Well, it probably wouldn’t be practical to come down here for that.  I only know I don’t have to check my 2008 TS Envoy to make sure it has shore power.  Great relief.  Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

The brushes get burnt out/ worn out because people move the cord by pulling on it or retracting it while plugged in. Get the cord where you want it then plug it in, saving the brushes from arcing.

I don’t think I ever moved the reel after being plugged in.  At a campsite, I pull out the amount of cord needed, then plug in.  At home the RV is always plugged in, and it is about the same amount of cord after every trip.  I use Progressive Tech. surge protector, so there’s a three minute delay before the contactor kicks in.  Maybe it’s because it’s always the same length at home.

I never pull or retract the cord when plugged in.  It's 13 years old...think it just wore out.
