After my recent trip to Spain I found that I had been charged €160.60
instead of €61.50 for an overnight stay in a small posada in the
Picos. I have since been in e-mail contact with the proprietors
through an intermediary (they don't have e-mail) about this, and
believe it to be a simple mistake, which they accept and are willing
to refund the difference. Unfortunately, I used my British debit card
instead of a credit card to pay, and they haven't been able to credit
it using the card number, so have asked for my bank details for a
direct transfer.

I don't have any problem with this, although I would send the details
by fax, not e-mail, which is notoriously insecure. However, they ask
for numbers which do not correspond to my bank account numbers, either
in quantity or arrangement. Here is part of the message:

So can I ask some of you expats what information is needed to send
money from Spain to a British bank account? The irony is that my bank
is the only major British bank which is Spanish owned, but I realise
that doesn't make the slightest bit of difference.

Saludos

They are of course asking for the Spanish way or writing the account
numbers etc. I would imagine what you need is the 'bacs' number for your
engish account to send them which the internationally recognised number.

Their message says give us the full 20 digit bank account number, and
they will pay it. Hope you can do it a.s.a.p, so that they can close
off this unfortunate incident.

Of course, they are talking about your Spanish bank account, which you
obviously don't have. I don't think that you can pay into a UK account
from Spain.

You need someone in Spain with a bank account to accept the money for
you and forward it on to you.

Hi, I have used a debit card at supermarkets in Spain, ie Eroski, Carrefour,
Leroy Merlin and Bauhaus and when I have returned the item they have re
credit the money back to my debit card, but they would probably need the
debit card to process it through the machine. You probably need someone you
can trust to collect the refund for you and return it to you. What about
registered post with Euros in the envelope, probably worth the risk.
Regards. John

Mac,

You need to send them the IBAN (your account number in international format) and SWIFT code. From Wikipedia ...

IBAN format for Spain: ESkk BBBB GGGG KKCC CCCC CCCC
B = bank code, G=Branch/office number, K=Check digits, C = account No.

IBAN format for UK: GBkk BBBB SSSS SSCC CCCC CC
B = alphabetical bank code, S = sort code (often a specific branch), C = account No.

SWIFT or BIC code ....

Roger.

Thanks to all who offered help and advice on this. I at last got my
refund, and rather glad it took so long - the euro had appreciated
against the pound, and I came out of it quite well!

I'll have to think about that: slow refunds as an investment strategy!

Glad it worked out in the end.
