Hello all

I’ve just booked a holiday in Northern Portugal, but have included a 2 nights, 1 day trip across the border into Spain to visit Santiago de Compostela. We’ve splashed out and reserved a room at the Parador, having heard long ago how wonderful it is, and it’s proximity to the Cathedral. We’ll arrive late one afternoon and leave just over 36 hours later after breakfast. What I’d appreciate advice on is things I wont necessarily find in the guide books, or things that I will find that members will really, really recommend! If it’s relevant, we will arrive on a Wednesday and leave on Friday morning. And it’s not until September.

All thoughts and advice greatly appreciated.

Regards

Stewart
PS for those of you who followed an earlier post of mine, it DID prove impossible to hire a car in Porto and drop it off in Santiago. So we have booked to fly in and out of Porto.

When we visited Santiago (1999), my wife was interested in "puntillas" which in the colonies we would call "tatting." Found the store shown here:

It was on one of the major streets from the train station to the cathedral, pretty close to the cathedral.

The other thing we accidentally did was to hang around the back of the cathedral until a bus load of pilgrims arrived, then follow with them on their tour of the back of the altar where we kissed the head of St. James. I think they showed up just before Noon so they could do this and then attend the Pilgrim's Mass at Noon. Went to the Pilgrim's Mass twice. First day was cool with the censor swinging back and forth. On the second day the priest was grumpy about all the tourists who only came for the swinging censor and were wandering about during the mass, so he refused to swing it.

If I were going back again I would try harder to see if one of the many Galician folk groups: Berroguetto, Luar na Lubre, Susana Sevane, etc., were playing while I was there.

Enjoy your trip,

Tom

We stayed at the Pousada in Valenca do Minho.  It is situated at a beautiful location overlooking the river.  I'm sure the view is the same.  I can't vouch for the Pousada as it was 32 years ago when we were there but it still looks good on its webpage.
