We will be visiting Madrid for a couple of days in October, but our destination is really Alicante.  Can we purchase our air tickets for Alicante' after we are in Madrid since we are still not certain about travel dates or is there a savings if you buy ahead of time?  Can you also tell me the approximate time it takes for the flight and if there are several during the day to that location?  Thanks, del

I do not know anything about flights within Spain.  We flew from the US to Madrid, and then took the train to our next destination which was not that far from Alicante.  The trains are incredibly fast and quiet, and a pleasure to ride on.  You can get an inexpensive bus from the airport to the train station.  Upshot: consider the train especially if your destination is close to a train stop.

Having looked at www.iberia.es it seems it takes 1hr 10mins to fly Madrid to Alicante - a surprisingly long time until you remember it is only a small plane - and that there are 4 flights per day (I searched Wednesday) 07:30; 11:45; 15:50 and 20:00. There's a range of prices but the Basica (cheapest)  was from 163 euros (last flight of the day) to 207 euros (morning flights). The Flexible price is  353 euros per person. All-in-all taking the train (or bus) seems good advice.
