Visiting the Basque region and Rioja vineyard region this spring

Revisiting Spain this mid-April to early May. I have always enjoyed
the many comments from this google group on places to go and
interesting things to see in Spain. So please do not hold back. One of
my kids is in Getxo for a semester of college credits. We will be
visiting him and casually cruising the coast line (San Sebastian,
Gernika, Saint Jean de Luz, etc.) and the Rioja wine region. Adverse
to big cities, we love the back country and sites rich in history.
Fans of Michener’s Iberia and anything historical in the region.
Please point us to any "must sees” or just wonderful spaces you have
run across. Many thanks to Mac and others who have shed light on cool
places to visit. We are, of course, just happy to be going there
