Clara Hatem

Some of you will remember Clara Hatem, who was an active member of
this list a couple of years ago when she spent a year or so working,
studying and travelling in Spain.

Clara is Lebanese and I contacted her recently to check how she was in
these difficult times. I'm posting her reply below for those who know
her, albeit only from her TravelSpain postings.

Dear Roger,

Again many thanks for your thoughts and for your words. The times we
are living in Lebanon are very difficult ones, for all the country. I
personnally live in a quite 'safe' region, East of Beirut; By safe I
mean that it is not a direct target for Israeli bombings. But with
each child dying in south Lebanon, it is all of us loosing a bit of
our lifes.

The bombings are basically targetting West suburbs of Beirut, in which
there are now buildings completely erased. And the south of the
country. And of course many infrastructures, bridges, roads,
electricity plants, ports, mobile phone stations.., irrelevant of
where they are located. This is why we try not to move a lot, and
especially at night.

My email addresses are either <snipped> or the <snipped> one. I am
reading both. Since last week we have reopened the offices, and there
are turns for people... personnally I am coming each day, i live very
close to the office.

glad to know that member of our Travelspain family is okay. Do you
know if she's still reading Travelspain? If so, I want to tell her
that I'm thinking about her, wish her well, and wish for her country a

Thanks for your supportive and friendly words. My special thanks also go to
Roger for posting my news. I am doing well, and so are my family and all
close relatives and friends. We sincerely hope that the war will take end
soon and we are all very sure that despite of these tough times, Lebanon
will remain what it has always been: a message of love, hope, beauty and

I pray to G-D that you and all Lebanese will see the end of this mess.
We, in Haifa are hanging in underground shelter not even dare to think
about work. We are waiting to be able to come out to breath some fresh
air.

Hi Clara,

It's good to hear from you. I'm glad that you're OK. It's
definitely crazy time in your region.

I still remember the time when you, Roger and I met for lunch in
Madrid in 2004.
Since I moved away from Europe, I have not been back to Spain and
haven't
keep up to date to the happening on this list. But I do miss Spain a
lot. Hopefully,
one day, I will have time to visit Spain again.
