Coming over the Sierra de Guaderrama was easy and beautiful - the
palace and gardens at La Granja, the snow-bedecked pines over the
pass, the easy roll down the sunlit southern slopes. But then a
dreadful mistake. We made for El Pardo. Extensive woodlands, a much-
visited beautiful area near Madrid, aperfect place to stay and leave
for the airport tomorrow.
Reality - traffic-choked multiple motorways, confusingly named and
numbered (just escaped being forced into Madrid), and no
accommodation. Had to get out of this nightmare and head back to the
hills, so now in Miraflores, a perfectly pleasant small town, ready
for home tomorrow, having almost circumnavigated Madrid, with
diversions mostly interesting and enjoyable.

You've just put into words what I'm sure the great majority of the group are thinking! I certainly was.
Maybe we should have a whip-round and pay for Mac to return ASAP!

Agreed. Always a pleasure and wonderful historical references. Thank
you all.
Headed there again this spring and inspired as ever. This time to
Basque region as my son will be attending school in Bilbao. I'm
especially looking forward to seeing Guernica and San Sebastián.
