SINGAPORE - Sphere Conferences and the Myanmar Tourism Federation (MTF) will jointly organise the country's first hospitality and tourism investment conference.

The Myanmar Hospitality and Tourism Conference 2013 will be held in Yangon from February 26 to 28 2013 at the Traders Hotel.

The decision to host this inaugural event is timely as Myanmar looks at liberalising its economy to attract foreign investors.

According to a recent study by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Myanmar's GDP is forecasted to grow between 7 to 8 per cent. It also offers untapped tourism potential with less than a million tourists having visited Myanmar in 2010, as compared to 16 million tourists who visited Thailand in the same year.

Sphere Conferences is a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings, Singapore's leading multimedia group which publishes newspapers such as The Straits Times.

The Myanmar Hospitality and Tourism Conference 2013 is positioned as the gateway for property developers, operators of hospitality and tourism properties, financiers and investors to explore, evaluate and expand Myanmar's potential as a travel destination.

The Myanmar government will also be sharing its tourism master plan, detailing a suite of proposals to boost the tourism sector and showcase the country's potential projects and investment opportunities to position itself as a major tourist destination.

The signing ceremony for this partnership was held in the Traders Hotel, Yangon on Tuesday October 2.

It was attended by Mr Chua Wee Phong, Chairman of Sphere Conferences and U Yan Win, Chairman of MTF, and witnessed by U Htay Win, Deputy Director General, Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

U Yan Win, Chairman of MTF, said: "This gives us an opportunity to leverage on Sphere Conferences' expertise and extensive networks of public and private partners, thereby creating a more engaging platform to boost our tourism sector.

"With this partnership in place, and the guidance of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, we aim to bring Myanmar's tourism development to a whole new level," he added.

Mr Chua Wee Phong, Chairman of Sphere Conferences, said: "We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with MTF in developing one of Myanmar's most important sectors - tourism.

He also said: "Sphere Conferences is well positioned to facilitate partnerships and industry exchanges to strengthen our value proposition as the choice partner for the Myanmar Hospitality and Tourism Conference."
