A luxury cruise ship MV Azamara arrived at Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa in Yangon on December 16 to make a tour of the country.

The trip was organised by Voyages International Tourism Co Ltd in cooperation with the Hotels and Tourism Ministry and the Transport Ministry.

“MV Azamara is an American cruise vessel carrying the largest number of passengers [to Myanmar] this year,” said company Managing Director Thet Lwin Toe.

The vessel carrying 580 passengers and 398 crew members entered Myanmar via Port Blair of India. Most of the passengers are Americans, and some of them are German and Swiss.

The tourists visited the Shwedagon Pagoda and went around Yangon downtown area on December 16 evening. Some of them went on a day-and-half trip to Bagan while others visited some tourist attractions including the National Races Village and Yangon University in Yangon.

“This is the first time I have been to Myanmar, which appeals to me very much. What is happening and changing here is interesting. I am also excited to visit the Yangon University that President Obama has recently been to. But what I feel sorry for the university is that it remains closed,” an American tourist William Chrisholm said.

The cruise vessel is due to leave for Thailand’s Port of Phuket at about 5pm today.

I want to know whether we are now officially allowed to bring our guests to our esteemed university or will the dogs still bark at us?
