Stink from the Hydro Hot exhaust is strong in the bathroom. We had
this looked at by TS service in Wakarusa, but it model was never
resolved. Our coach is a 2005 42DS04 model.

Al,
it is more than likely that there is little or no insulation under the
shower.

Bishop,

Thanks for the info. The shower seems to be well sealed to the wall.
Checking around that area, the cabinet under the vanity seems to have
a stronger odor. Perhaps there are some pipes coming through the
floor that are not sealed well. It appears that the bottom of the
vanity is screwed in. I'll have to see if I can remove that and see
anything in that area.

Al, My TS wet bay is directly under the bath.  There was improper seals where the 3" septic enters the black tank.  Also the 2" entering the Gray.  It appears that the factory attempted to use silicone bead on the outside which only rolled off.  This is accessible from the compartment door that accesses the water heater and furnace.  There is a lot of air flow allowed between this bay and the bathroom.  If your cold air return is in the bathroom as mine is, then this is very NOT sealed between all the tanks and the bathroom area and is intended to be part of the "living ambient air circulation" in its design.  With this said, you would not be attempting to seal the bath from the "wet bay" but go to the problem itself.  You should NOT have any smell - PERIOD!  I'm sure you are aware to keep water in the drain traps that may evaporate.  FYI, Great stuff insulation can be an incredible sealant.  apply, let stand for 15 minutes or so, then press the gasses out, flattening like putty.  It sticks to more than silicone does by a long shot and it IS a sealant.  This was MY solution to the same problem = success!

Richard,
You are right on the money.
Al,
If you were to pull down the panel in the wet bay to gain access to
the plumbing of the tanks you could follow them to their floor entry
points. I am sure that you'll find one or two lacking in adequate
insulation.

Bishop,

I pulled down the aluminum cover at the top of the wet bay and looking
up into the vanity I saw large holes where the pipes went up. I could
see the bottom of the floor of the vanity and that area is open where
a Hydro Hot heat exchanger and the air return are located. I see
screws holding the floor in the vanity so I am hoping that I can get
that removed and get at the holes from the top and seal it with some
expanding foam. I ran out of time today!

Thanks, Al

I have the same "leave-out" in my floor under the bath base cabinet.
I found when I ran my Fantastic fan on "exhaust", it drew all kinds of
air through this hole, causing temp changes and odors inside the
coach. My simple solution was to install a piece of water heater
insulation jacket over this hole, duct taping it in place. But a more
permanent solution would be to install some foam.....is the std.
urethane foam such as "Great Stuff" OK for doing this or do I need the
heavy-duty black stuff TS used in other areas of the coach? Is there
any reason this leave out wasn't sealed during the construction phase?

I have uploaded a picture to the "Files" area of the hole that I found
under the bathroom vanity. Removing the floor of the vanity gives
access to the opening. It is a wide open path for outside air in the
wet compartment to enter the coach. This is especially bad if the
coach has a hydro hot heating system since there is an air intake
right next to the hole. I have "stuffed" the hole but I am still
getting some air that I can feel when I run the Fantastic Vent fan so
I have more to do. It's a tough place to get access to. 40" arms
would help!

Richard, I'm confused over the term "living ambient air
circulation". Are you saying outside air is needed inside the coach?
For what? When you say "Furnace", do you mean HydroHot or a
conventional forced-air unit? With a HH, I would think there is no
need for an air return, as the HH radiator gets it's own air from
inside the coach.

As explained earlier in this thread I had a "blanket" over this leave-
out and upon removing it recently, I now get a lot of diesel fumes
inside the coach when running the HH burner. That's not the way it's
supposed to work, is it?

Yes and NO.  The wet bay is integrated with the water heater and furnace in my coach which required the cold air return via that wet bay.  This keeps the wet bay from damage in cold conditions.  I have to tell you that we had the test this week and the TS FAILED big time!  Not only do I have the heat and air circulating in the wet bay with ADDED cold air return for better circulation, I added 2 substantial heat exchangers of which one heats the cold air before it enters the wet bay.  I still had frozen lines.  With a few other power hungry issues, I am extremely disappointed at this time.

On the flip side, you do not need the cold air return (air coming from the wet bay) without a FHA system but keep in mind the freezing issues.  (catch 22).

Well, guess I'm headed to HD tomorrow for some urethane foam. I'm
going to tuck my fiberglass mat in under the floor decking and seal
around the edges with foam. Tried to heat with diesel tonight and the
fumes were incredible!

"Great Stuff" comes in minimal expansion for windows (blue)
Regular (red) and maximum (black).  Very strong expansion and the sculpture tool to finish is a Ginzu or boning knife.  Do all, fix all!  Paintable.  Breaks down in sun.
