On the tip of the Indian Peninsula Rameshwaram is a globally renowned destination. It is a famous pilgrimage as well as a beautiful holiday destination. The island of Rameshwaram is in the shape of a conch, spread over an area of 61.8 sq.km. This holy place is considered as the Varanasi of South.
It is believed that a pilgrimage to Kashi remains incomplete with out a tour to Rameshwaram. It is the place where Lord Rama worshiped Lord Shiva (the ultimate power) to wash away his sin. And from here Rama made the bridge to rescue Sita from the cage of Ravana. The presiding deity of the temple is Linga Of Sri Ranganatha, which most importantly is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India.
Attractions of the place:
Ramanathaswamy Temple:
The temple of Ramanathaswamy dominates the whole Rameshwaram. The
temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture. The huge corridors
with beautifully sculptured pillars of the temple are of great
attraction. There are 22 wells in the temple which are of great tourist
attraction. Devotees take bath on them and these have medicinal value.
The idols in the temple are beautifully decorated. In short the temple
of Ramanathaswamy is a must visit place in India.
Gandhamadana Parvatam:
It is the highest point of the temple and provides a panoramic view
of whole city. It is believed that the foot print of Lord Rama is
worshiped here.
Erwadi:
Located in close proximity to the city. Erwadi is one of the most
essential and popular site of Muslim Pilgrimage in South India, it
boosts of the tomb of Ibrahim Sahid Aulia. Muslim travelers from all
over the world visit this place in large number especially during the
month of December to participate in the annual celebrations in order to
honor the saint.
Ramanathapuram:
Not far away from the city is the popular ancient town of
Ramanathapuram, popular among the tourists as home to Ram Vilas Palace
which belong to Sethupati Rajas. The oil paintings of the Rajah's of the
bygone era and the exquisitely designed ceilings and walls adorned with
18th century murals on various themes is a must watch here.
Beach:
The beaches of Rameshwaram are excellent place to spent time in leisure. The coral reef, sand and sun
attract tourists to these from far and wide.
Dhanushkodi:
It is a beautiful place to visit in thecity, though the cyclone of
1964 washed away everything. Dhanushkodi is connected to the legend that
it the place from where Hanuman made the pebble bridge to to get Lanka.
