The Infernal Devices: Clockwork Angel - The Manga is a graphic novel adaptation of the first book in The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare, a prequel series to The Mortal Instruments. The manga was illustrated by HyeKyung Baek and published by Yen Press in 2012. It follows the story of Tessa Gray, a sixteen-year-old American girl who travels to Victorian London and gets involved in the supernatural world of the Shadowhunters, warriors who fight demons and other creatures of the dark.
Plot Summary
Tessa Gray arrives in London in 1878, hoping to reunite with her brother Nate, who sent her a ticket from New York. However, she is kidnapped by two women who call themselves the Dark Sisters and force her to use her hidden power of shape-shifting. They tell her that they are preparing her for their master, the mysterious Magister, who wants to marry her.

Meanwhile, Will Herondale, a Shadowhunter from the London Institute, infiltrates the Dark House where Tessa is held captive and rescues her. He brings her to the Institute, where she meets other Shadowhunters, such as Jem Carstairs, Charlotte Branwell, Henry Branwell, and Jessamine Lovelace. She also learns about the world of the Nephilim, the Downworlders (vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and faeries), and the Mortal Instruments (three sacred objects that grant power to the Shadowhunters).
Tessa agrees to help the Shadowhunters find out more about the Magister and his plans, hoping to also find her brother. She discovers that the Magister is creating an army of clockwork creatures, called automatons, that can be controlled by a device called the Pandemonium Club. He also has a spy within the Institute, who is feeding him information and sabotaging their efforts.
As Tessa gets closer to the Shadowhunters, she develops feelings for both Will and Jem, who are best friends and parabatai (a bond of warriors). She also learns more about her own identity and heritage, and the secrets that surround her. She faces danger, betrayal, and romance as she tries to stop the Magister from unleashing his infernal devices on London.
Reception
The Infernal Devices: Clockwork Angel - The Manga received positive reviews from critics and fans of the original series. It was praised for its faithful adaptation of the story, its beautiful artwork, and its emotional impact. It was also nominated for several awards, such as the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens in 2013 and the Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Graphic Novels & Comics in 2012. It was followed by two more volumes, adapting Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess, respectively.
