Professor Donald Macalady has recently transitioned to Professor
Emeritus, at CSM’s Department of Chemistry and Geochemistry. To mark
this occasion, several of Don’s students and closest colleagues are
planning a symposium that will highlight recent developments in the
fields where Don has contributed during his career.

The symposium will be at the American Chemical Society National
meeting in San Francisco, 21-25 March 2010. The scope of the symposium
is broadly defined as “Aquatic Redox Chemistry”, including
interactions between iron, natural organic matter (NOM), and
contaminants.

Specific topics of interest include—but are not limited to—speciation
and redox reactions of iron, structure and reactivity of NOM as a
redox shuttle, and redox reactions that contribute to the fate of
organics (e.g., pesticides and nitroaromatic model compounds) and
metals (e.g., arsenic).

Both invited and contributed papers are planned. Invited speakers
include: Janet Hering, Diane McKnight, Ken Nealson, René
Schwarzenbach, Garrison Sposito, and Eric Weber.

Both invited and contributed papers will have to submit short
abstracts by 19 October 2009 to the American Chemical Society website
(http://www.chemistry.org). More details on what and where to submit
will be announced later.

The call for papers for this symposium is available as a PDF file from
the link under “Files” below “Discussions” on the home page to
“Tratnyek Lab” Google group page (http://groups.google.com/group/
