Richard, Nicci and Cara return to the Wizard's Keep and, with the information gathered from Tovi and the book "Chainfire", they finally manage to convince Zedd, Nathan, and Ann of the truth. While no-one but Richard remembers Kahlan, at least now they believe that she exists.

Fearing for Kahlan's life, Richard desperately tries to find some trace of her and at the same time convince the others that she exists. His search leads him to the witch woman, Shota, who reveals "that which you seek is long buried with the bones". In return for more information, Shota demands the Sword of Truth, which Richard relinquishes to her pet, Samuel, the previous bearer of the sword. Shota then utters the words "Chainfire" and "The Deep Nothing" and tells Richard to "beware the four-headed viper". She also warns Richard of a "blood beast" conjured by several wizards and Sisters of the Dark, under the orders of Jagang. The beast is meant to kill Richard and is as unstoppable as it is unpredictable. Further, the beast is able to track Richard when he uses his gift because of the way Nicci healed his arrow wound.

For a start, I love these books. That said we all know that pillars of creation and naked empire are not exactly the best in the series. I was told that chainfire was the beginning of a significant return to form, and was really looking forward to getting started on it. I'm about an hour into the audiobook now, though, and something is bugging the absolute hell out of me.

It's made very apparent that Nicci and Cara completely and utterly failing to consider the possibility that Richard might be telling the truth (that kahlan does, in fact, exist) is dependent on the fact that Richard had just almost died. With that in mind, my question is this - how in seven hells did Richard even get wounded in the first place?

After visiting Shota, Richard visits Zedd at Wizard's Keep. He goes so far as to dig up Kahlan's grave in Aydindril to prove his truth is the absolute truth. After finding an actual body buried there, he goes into depression. Nicci rejoins Richard's story at this point, and I discovered I really liked this character. We see how much she loves and worships Richard, ever since he gave her that revelation in Faith of the Fallen. This entire book, she was written in such a lovely way, I looked forward to the parts that were given from her point of view. She convinces Richard to keep to his ideals, even if she and everybody else disagree with them.

In an interesting twist of fate, we also learn that the Boxes of Orden were created in ancient times to counter the Chainfire spell. How, I'm sure we'll find out before the end. As it stands, however, Zedd and Nicci and Cara and those closest to Richard now know the truth about Kahlan, and how they have misinterpreted prophecy -again. The final battle is not against the Imperial Order, but against the Keeper, through the Boxes of Orden, and that is the battle Richard must lead.

i don't really want to compare series. i just want a soapbox to preach about how lame the sword of truth is. it is so lame. when richard rahl isn't just pulling things out of his butt to save the day in some insanely coincedental plot of a henry steven keeler bent, then the story is just a graphic description of violence that is not nearly disturbing enough, or he is using his books as a platform to spread his insane, pre-new deal ideology. terry goodkind sucks.

I dont think the Sword of Truth series is rubbish i just think Terry Goodkind cant think of his own ideas. There is one aspect (only one, mind!) that I think is better about the Sword of Truth books, and that is the Sword of truth itself. More or less everything in Sword of Truth has an equivalent in Wheel of Time which Terry Goodkind stole off Robert Jordan, and i like Richards "significant magic sword" better than Rands.

i have read upto the one where Nicci forces richard to go to the old world with her. There are a million similarities. They overlap on several parts ie there are blade masters which is obvious. Aes Sedai have warders and confessors have wizards, but boundary wardens are so much like warders its annoying. Richard and Rand both put their swords in the ground. Richard and Rand are exactly the same except that their hair colours are different.
