"Insidious: Chapter 3" is a big improvement on the weak "Chapter 2." The first "Insidious" was incredibly scary, one of the best horror films of the past decade, but the sequel felt like it was rushed into production and not enough thought was given to the storyline. It had some decent ideas, and it ended with a scene that made me think a next chapter would bring a fresh face to the proceedings. For this reason, I was only moderately interested in seeing another in the franchise.
Taking things back in time, to give us more of a backstory to Elise, one that was mildly touched upon in a flashback sequence in "Chapter 2," does make for an intriguing story. I did like getting to know her better, even if her inevitable team up with Specs and Tucker feels a bit slapped together. I can only hope this will lead to a deeper understanding of her actions as a helpful spirit down the road, if more chapters are to come.
