Note: macOS 10.12 thru 10.15 support tabs in applications, including Scapple. Apple sadly removed this feature from borderless windows in macOS 11, and we await them adding it back in.

Scapple has been designed from the ground up to be a document based program, much like a text editor, where files are loaded, saved, and closed. This uses your computer's native and considerable file organisation powers to handle the grouping of compound ideas into topical folders, or through the use of the operating system's search systems. In opposite to this system is the design theory which creates "projects" in the software, which can then organise compound ideas, much like Scrivener does.

In addition to the role of files on the system, and whether they represent singular or compound ideas, there are considerations of user interface. Scapple adheres to the strong system metaphor of using singular objects to represent singular ideas or functions. A Scapple board is simple and elegant, and the window containing it will only ever contain that one single board. Two different functions or ideas must then occupy two different windows, which allows for a level of operation between the two both visually and functionally in a way that compound views like tabbed browsers do not afford. Simply put, layers and tabs in a window are designed specifically to obscure while singular windows are designed to keep everything revealed and on the same plane. We have chosen the latter for Scapple, as we feel that it most closely fits the role of the software as a "quick and dirty" thinking tool.

So what if you choose to use the software another way, as a sprawling idea manager perhaps? Naturally there is nothing wrong with that, we all use software differently from one another. There are a few things you can do to manage your Scapple documents in a more cohesive fashion:

On the Mac, the Finder is your general purpose system for creating folders, storing files in them, and designing views such as saved Spotlight searches. If you are unfamiliar with how this system is designed to work, it may be beneficial to read up on the Finder and learn how to use it to organise your Scapple files, which will ultimately lead you to greater control over your computer for other programs and their files, too.

Recently, a post about scrapple on the Pennsylvania Dutch At-Home Companion blog generated a lot of interest. This post contributes another primary source on scrapple, from Henry R. Bergey of Franconia Township, writing circa 1925.

On This Page you will Find how to Prepare a Good and also a Clean and helsy Scrapel with a Good tast and not mixed with all kinds of Stuff that a Person would hardly Eat them when they would know how they Prepare his Scrapel. it came to my Ears that Some People Prepare his Scrapel on a very comen Stile: to Sell to his Custimers: that lacketh my abedied for Scrapel any moor.

I was always a lover of Scrapel, Especial now when my Teeth getten Dull, and Four Score years Old. then my thought Came on Isaac when he geten Old he calleth his Elder Son, and told him to go out in the Field and Search for wilbert [Wildbret = venison] to make him a Saveour [savory] meat which he loveth then it came in my mind, could we not also make a Savour meat of Chicken in Stead [of] Wilbert which I love.

So we killed a Fat chicken and Boiled it, then Grinded them and my wife Mixt Corn and Bucked [buckweat] meal, and Coucked them for an half Our. and you wer Surprised when you would taste them: and not all that we know what we Eating. Therefore Ill Recommended Chicken Scrapel For Old and Young People who Search to have there Eatables Clean. We Received 14 lbs. Scrapel of one Chicken at 9 cts. per [lb.?]

I will give you a Description of my Saveour Mete which I loveth in the Presend time, when I am Four Score yours Old. Ill Generly tock two Slise of Bread and Smeard them well with Butter, and Put a TeaSpone full of Shuger on top, then Ill Pour a little hot water on top to Soke it then I add about 1/2 of a lb chick Scrapel and mix them together, and also Sometimes Pour a little Boiled Oat meal upon it and mixed with a little milk that would make a Saveour meat (not a Rich meal) which I loveth. and I would find no falt when I would recieved it three times a Day.

Because I have learn that a man Eateth For to live, and not live For to Eat. Espesial ought to know what to Eat that may Be Good for there complain[t]. Ill often heart People Say, no I Daunt want to have Every meal a like I want a Chang. When they Even knoweth what is good For ther Complain[t] But they wan[t] to Pleas his Mouth and careth more to Pleas There mouth then they do for there Body. But that is nothing new. We find when the Lord Fed the childrens of Israel in the former world with mana 40 years they also comenct to mer[mur] they want to have a cange they want meat. We find the lord giveth them meat So they Eat quailes that the Flesh came out there Nusetrills (Read the 11 chapter 4 Book of Moses). So it may Be Posable that the People have not Bin Fead well when they Get what they Desired and that is often the troubel in the Present time.

On windows 11 plenty of Ram, but Scapple version 1.41 has become lagging when moving background shapes that are magnetic and when typing there is visible lag. Not sure why, did see info on number of notes, and background shapes on background shapes is effecting projects with modest numbers of notes and images.
One file is has pictures and 25 notes and size is 1.9 megs
another has 44 notes with no pictures and is 3.8 megs
Any suggestions for improved preformance would be helpful. Have rebooted computer without improvement.

I would suggest doing this on copies of the originals, since as I mention, this can break the layout (particularly where word wrap would change the height of the note, which could be all over the place if you use auto-fit):

So I tried that going from 8 to 4 seemed to help a little but not all the way and in latest sluggish projects double clicking does not always create a new note.
Took the older large project with 296 notes and 7 megs of files and changed padding and new notes created new project with higher padding and typing and movement of shapes and notes is fine(responsive). seems since latest update that this has happened. I did add custom note styles to some of those projects and imported note styles creating duplicate styles which I deleted. (not sure if that would have any impact

So took out all the images from one project and dropped size to 1.85 megs and still sluggish but better, inconsistent on double clicking for notes to appear. Will add note from menu, but typing in text lags, I would be glad to send scapple file if that would help. I am typing in another smaller project and dumping in notes for now, but obviously would like to figure out what to do.

Be glad to. I have a recent file on different project in scapple that is working fine with minimal lag should I send both to compare. I can zip and email or can I share a link on Dropbox with you? I have not done before. Will try to send to you.

Clear marked improvement with removing the cloud border on shapes and notes. Jagged notes had a similar effect though seemed to be lower level of magnitude. I have been adjusting project and changing boreders with great improvement. Thank you for to getting back to me.

Few things in the culinary world evoke as much emotion as scrapple. Scrapple is in the company of natto, durian, Limburger cheese, and uni when it comes to how upset some folks get at its mere mention. I believe that anyone who reacts to scrapple with such disdain must not have ever tried scrapple, much less good scrapple.

Scrapple phobia has its roots in a fear of the unknown. No one seems to know what is in scrapple, and they have heard some horrific stories of its elements. Based on this, not only do they not want to try scrapple, they do not even want to hear the word scrapple.

There is a lot to like about really good scrapple, like the kind I am about to tell you how to make at home. By far the best thing about it is its crisp meaty goodness. At its best, scrapple is a simple mix of meat scraps, grains, rich stock, and herbs and spices. Scrapple is at home in a sweet bath of warm maple syrup, or can be part of a savory breakfast when a crisp slab of scrapple is cooked into a fried egg with some roasted green chilies.

I started making scrapple at home because we eat a lot of spare ribs at our house. I like to trim the racks of ribs to remove the chine bone and to look nice after their turn on the Porkulator. I used to hack up and brine all of those bits, cook them along with the racks of ribs, and serve them as a warmup before digging into the main slabs of ribs. They were good, but soon they were piling up. Good for pots of beans and such, but there is only so much of that you can do. So I started saving all of these cutoffs in bags in the freezer.

Put all of the bones and meat scraps into a large stockpot and cover with water. Add a carrot or two, a celery stalk or two, an onion cut in quarters, a small handful of garlic cloves (more if you like more), a bay leaf, 1t black peppercorns, 2t coriander seed, and 1T of minced sage. Add other herbs as you prefer. Bring the pot to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer. Add 1T salt. Simmer the pot until the meat is very tender and coming off of the bones.

Using a large slotted spoon, lift all of the solids out of the pot. If you have another large pot, you can just set a colander over the clean pot and pour from one pot into the other. Discard the bay leave, and peppercorns. Mince the other veg and add it into the meats. Allow the meats to cool in a large bowl or bowls.

While the meats are cooling, continue to cook the stock. Taste it and adjust the flavor to your liking. If you prefer something other than coriander and sage, go for it. You may want to add more coriander and sage now. You may add hot peppers, savory, marjoram, thyme, or other herbs and spices that you want to flavor the finished product. There will be more stock than you need, so let it reduce.
