Question about OD matrix

I want to generate the OD matrix of different TAZ and different operators, so I use matesp.exe, what do the different fields mean, and does volume represent the number of passengers? Why do I use vol-dist divided by volume, and find that the two are actually far away The neighborhood is very close.
