In Islam, when a Muslim or Islamic angels (malā'ikah) recite salawat, it means they are sending it to the prophet and are showing Allah their respect for Muhammad, while when the same is sending upon prophet by Allah himself, it means he is blessed by Allah.[1] "When Muhammad sends Salawat upon the believers, it indicates his prayer for their welfare, blessing and salvation."[7]
Ibn Asakri transmitted from al-Hasan bin Ali that Muhammad said: "Invoke more Salawat upon me, for your invocation is conducive to your sins being forgiven. And pray for me a high status and intercession, for surely my intercession will plead in your favour before Allah."[6]
According to Ja'far al-Sadiq, Muhammad said: "All supplications to Allah will remain in a veil from the sky until a Salawat is sent to Mohammad PBUH and his Household."[10] In another tradition, Ja'far al-Sadiq was quoted that: "Whoever sends Salawat on the Prophet PBH and his Household means 'I am standing on the promise that I gave when Allah asked me, 'Am I not your lord? And I answered yes you are.'"[11]
ʾAllāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā ʾāli Muḥammadin kamā ṣallayta ʿalā ʾIbrāhīma wa ʿalā ʾāli ʾIbrāhīma ʾinnaka Ḥamīdun Majīdun ʾAllāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā ʾāli Muḥammadin kamā bārakta ʿalā ʾIbrāhīma wa ʿalā ʾāli ʾIbrāhīma ʾinnaka Ḥamīdun Majīdun
Allah, sanctify Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have sanctified Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.[12]
Muhammad was also reported to have said: "Do not invoke incomplete salawat upon me". His sahabah asked him: "What is incomplete salawat?" He replied them: "When you say: 'O Allah, send blessing to Muhammad' and then stop on that. Rather say: ٱللَّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ 'O Allah! send Your blessing to Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad."[13]
It is said that whoever sends 10 salawat upon Muhammad and his household will be sent a thousand salawat by God and his angels, and whoever sends 1,000 salawat upon Muhammad and his household will not be affected by the fire of hell.[14][15]
Sending salawat upon Muhammad and his progeny is said to pave the way for his intercession on the day of judgement,[16] serve as a compensation for sins,[15] and to be the most weighty deed on the scale of deeds.[17] Salawat upon Muhammad and his households is said to lead to the affection of God and his messenger,[18] to purify deeds,[19] and to serve as the light in the grave, As-Sirāt bridge and Paradise.[20]
In just about a week, insha'Allah, I will begin my journey into my masters degree in Marriage and Family therapy. To say that I am nervous is an understatement but that nervousness is closely followed by excitement. This has been a long term dream and now that it is within reach, I feel that I really need to turn to Allah ﷻ for help and guidance. I have been intending to write my intention and place it above my desk to be constantly reminded of why I am doing this to begin with as intentions constantly change unless they are checked. Insha'Allah I hope to serve the ummah and aid in uniting families. I will most likely send a photo of it when it is done in my Wednesday Musings letters.
Since this is a scary and a happy new journey, what better way to start it than by seeking Allah's blessings? I decided to open this up for you in case you would like to join me as well by creating this Salawat Challenge. Would you like to join in?
I want to leave this upto you so that you don't feel overwhelmed by a number that I have chosen for myself. Remember, however, that this is a challenge so do more than you normally do. If you normally do 10 times a day, add 20 more to make this a challenge. If you do a 1000 salawat a day, make it 1500. Choose a number that will push you out of your comfort zone for the sake of Allah ﷻ. Intentions are important!
This challenge will run for 7 days. For each day of the challenge, I will be sending all participants one Hadith a day in the email as means of motivation and knowledge. We will begin Monday, January 31, 2022 insha'Allah
If you have not memorized the ways to send salawat in Arabic, it is important for you to add this to your to-do list and this challenge will help you accomplish that insha'Allah. Here are some authentic ways of sending salawat that I collected the following information from this website.
O Allaah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent prayers upon the family of Ibraaheem, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibraaheem, You are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory.
Ibn Al-Qayyim (rh) mentions the benefits of sending sawalat upon the Prophet ﷺ in his book "Jalaa ul-Afghaam fee Fadlis-Salaati was-Salaam 'alaa Khayril Anaam ﷺ" (also collected from this website):
That it is to be hoped that his supplication will be responded to if he precedes it with that. So it causes the supplication to ascend to the Lord of creation, when prior to this it was suspended between the heavens and the earth.
It saves from the stench of a gathering wherein Allaah and His Messenger are not mentioned, and where Allaah-the Most High- is not praised and extolled, and where salaat is not sent upon His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم).
It is a cause of blessing for the one who sends salaat, in his self, his deeds, and his life, and the means of his welfare. This is because the one who sends salaat is supplicating to his Lord that He should bless him and his true followers; and this supplication will be answered; and recompense conforms to the deed.
That salaat upon him (صلى الله عليه و سلم) is a cause of his loving that person. So because it is a cause for the one who sends salaat upon him to increase in love of him, likewise it is a cause for him to love the one who sends salaat upon him (صلى الله عليه و سلم).
Salawat are the prayers of angels and humanity praising and invoking blessing upon the Prophet Muhammad, the Crown of Creation and the Axis of Manifest Being, may Allah the Exalted bestow His grace ceaselessly upon him. Know that Allah desires the salawat prayer from our heart and greatly rewards it. For in actuality it is Allah who is praising the Prophet with the tongue of humanity. In the love between Allah, the Prophet and his ummat, humanity, resides the great secret of Creation. Allah is praised, the Prophet is praised and humanity is praised on the breath of Love coursing though the salawat, bringing all back to the Source of Love.
O Allah, You Who are the only Reality and the loving foundation of our existence, please send Your blessings which are inestimable and beyond our understanding, to the Prophet Muhammad who is the soul of our being, and upon his family, and upon his intimate lovers, and upon the entire human family which is his blessed community.
When Holy Quran revealed that the believers should send praises upon the Prophet, the companions came to him asking how they should praise him. After a long silence, the Prophet responded with the following salawat. Since that time, it has been recited in the seated portion of salat. It may also be recited outside of salat.
Salawat for Prophet Muhammad is a form of respect and prayer for the Messenger of Allah, who is the perfect example for the Muslim community. Salawat is not only an expression of love and longing but also a means to draw closer to Allah SWT. Let us explore together the reading of salawat and its meaning, while reflecting on the beauty and brilliance of divine light conveyed through salawat.
The recitation of salawat is not merely symbolic, but also carries deep meaning. Each sentence contains life values that can inspire and motivate. Salawat teaches about simplicity, compassion, and sincerity in worship.
Salawat is not only a religious ritual but can also be integrated into daily life. By regularly reciting salawat, we accustom ourselves to always remember Allah and revive the Sunnah of the Prophet in every step we take. Additionally, there are several benefits of Salawat.
Dompet Dhuafa, as a humanitarian institution, has implemented various programs to assist the underprivileged. You can donate online, transfer through a bank account, or even participate as a volunteer. Through these real actions, we not only live out religious values but also become part of positive change in society.
Thus, as believers, we must stay connected to the Prophet ﷺ and keep his presence ﷺ alive in our hearts. We should try to continuously remember him ﷺ and praise him ﷺ as much as possible because he ﷺ is the cause of our success in this world and the Hereafter.
Scholars state that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returning salam applies to those who are present at his grave and those who are far away. The only difference is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hears the one who recites salawat before him, whereas the salawat recited from a distance are conveyed to him.
