Ride a bike in troy?  Be aware of this new initiative to ticket cyclists.   Know that you have a right to the (entire) road as long as you are following traffic law and Troy police officers have been known to be oblivious to bicyclists rights on past occasions. If you are ticketed unjustly contact Ken at nybc (see fwd below) who is part of a statewide campaign police departments on cyclists' rights.
Thx

Police will be ticketing cyclists in Troy under the guise of making us safer. You know, instead of enforcing the safe passing law or ticketing motorists for unsafe driving.
I know for a fact that Troy PD does not know or understand traffic law as it pertains to cyclists. I had a direct conversation with Officer Valente who stated he was the department bicycle educator. He insisted that a cyclist, under all circumstances must ride as close to the curb on the right as possible, regardless of debris, potholes, doors, or when turning left. He also was unaware of what the door zone even is and did not care that riding in it is dangerous.
Please be aware of this "initiative" and be careful when riding in Troy. If you do get a ticket, get in touch with me and I will try to get you assistance from some bike lawyers I know through my job.
Spread the word.

Public Safety Advisory: Pedestrian and Bicyclist Education and Enforcement Initiative Underway

TROY, NY – In coordination with a statewide effort to increase public awareness on pedestrian and bicyclist safety, the Troy Police Department Traffic Safety Unit will be distributing and posting pedestrian and bicycle safety information and brochures throughout the City of Troy during the week of June 26 – June 30. The safety effort will also include increased enforcement during the months of June and July.

The local safety effort by the Troy Police Department (TPD) is in support of the “Operation See! Been Seen” program recently announced by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The statewide initiative seeks to educate communities on traffic and pedestrian safety coupled with increased enforcement from local agencies. TPD’s Traffic Safety Unit will continue to conduct outreach and educational efforts throughout the week followed by a period of warnings to violators and then eventual enforcement actions will take place. The overall goal is to decrease pedestrian and bicycle related crashes and increase compliance with vehicle and traffic law for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

In recent months, the City of Troy has experienced an increase in pedestrian- and bicycle-related crashes resulting in injuries, including four separate incidents involving pedestrians struck by vehicles during two weeks in April and May. Educational efforts and increased enforcement by the TPD Traffic Safety Unit aim to reduce similar incidents across Troy. The TPD is committed to lowering the number of pedestrian crashes and make city roadways safe for users of all ages, abilities, and modes of travel.

Visit the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee website for safety tips and other information on pedestrian safety at http://safeny.ny.gov/peds-ndx.htm

For further information on Troy’s Pedestrian and Bicyclist Education and Enforcement Initiative, please contact the Troy Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit at (518) 270-4524.

Maybe Ken or his lawyer could cut this off at the pass by talking to the community officer, the chief, or both.  Might save a lot of people a lot of grief.

BEst,

Jim
