HI Folks,

The series of hearings that Chairman Smizik is announcing below builds
on the dialog that we have been having over the past 18 months in our
working group.

They should be excellent.

Mark your calendars!

Dear Members of the House Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change,

As you know, we passed several pieces of groundbreaking environmental
and energy legislation last session that are now being implemented,
but we didn’t put enough emphasis on transportation emissions.  The
transportation sector is responsible for nearly 40 percent of our
state’s emissions and we need to put the brakes on this problem.
That’s why our Committee will host a series of four informational
hearings this spring and summer on what Massachusetts can do to reduce
emissions in the transportation sector.

I encourage you all to attend our first informational hearing on this
topic, which will be Tuesday, April 13 at 10am in B-1.  It will
provide a general overview of transportation emission sources in
Massachusetts, categorized by transportation mode and location.

This event will feature speakers from the Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection (MassDEP), the Massachusetts Department of
Transportation (MassDOT), and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council
(MAPC).  MassDEP will outline their 1990 Baseline Emissions and 2020
Projection Report and how the transportation sector relates to the
Commonwealth’s economy-wide emissions.  MassDOT and MAPC will provide
more in-depth analyses of how transportation-related carbon emissions
in Massachusetts vary based on geography, fuel type, access to public
transit, access to employment, and access to living necessities.

We have not yet set the dates for the other three hearings, but you
can expect them to be once a month, in mid May, June, and July.  These
future hearings on transportation emissions will explain the current
strategies of the administration and others in reducing emissions and
will explore additional steps that should be taken moving forward.

All of hearings will be open to the public and media and legislators
are encouraged to attend.  If you would like a sample press release or
have questions, please feel free to contact me or my staff at
617-722-2676.

Best Wishes,

Frank
