I haven't found a reference for the cost of LIM.  Does anyone have an idea of cost or maybe even proportions of materials to at least get a baseline?  Weight of copper to iron to case.  Do LIM cost more than equivalent rotary motors, more than their relative efficiency difference?

The Baldor site I found has a pretty high weight to force ratio at 100% duty cycle.

The best source I've seen for comparing costs (and functions, advantages, disadvantages, etc.) between LIMs and LSMs is the 2004 FTA report, prepared by Sandia National Laboratories, "Comparison of Linear Synchronous and Induction Motors," done in conjunction with the Colorado Maglev Project.

The report is available at http://ntl.bts.gov/lib/24000/24600/24692/FTA-DC-26-7002-2004-01.pdf

Thanks Larry,
Lots of good information there and interesting conclusions for a sub-200 km/h application.

Maybe the difference in cost between LIM and rotatry IM is in cooling which would increase its continuous force in short stator applications?

I just found a paper with experimental motors that vary from 4:1 to 1:4 copper to iron ratios.  Looks like 100..200 kg of copper, so maybe 150 kg of copper for 8 kN thrust?
