WOW! - two quite well developed and content rich
websites for gondola fans. The "confidential"
report sells for $149, special price. From Prof.
Shalaby at the U of Toronto. I think I'd better
add a gondola section to my ITT website.

You'll quickly learn that the gondola site is very anti-PRT.

EVERYBODY!
Is anti-PRT!
(Except people who want to build and/or develop it and those who want to use it.)

Besides, his arguments are weak at best.

Gondola is rapidly becoming more 'intelligent' and adding it to your site is a good idea.
The gondola makers are tuned in to the urban market and have been supplying their product to cities for over a decade. Just not to North America,
Gondolas, which use the simplest possible guideway - a length of wire rope - already go off line (switch), hence no reason they couldn't everything that PRT professes to do. One upgrade that I see as the game changer is an on-board motor that in addition to propelling itself and reducing headway, would provide heat and air.
It may be the answer some on this site won't want.

But, can a gondola station be unmanned? Can it switch cars from line 1 to line 2 without anyone present for safety or other reasons?

I've ridden many gondolas, ski lifts, amusement rides and I see them as useful in certain niches. I'm just very skeptical about them being able to meet the demands of a route that requires change in direction, switch to second line, etc while handling 2000+ people per hour.

Eric, you ask if a gondola station be unmanned. I don't see why not. Right now, they detach from the haul cable and crawl through the station, but I see no reason that they couldn't, like PRT, stop for unloading and reloading.
The reason for the attendants is primarily because there are a lot of people loading and unloading, but given that modern autonomous people movers, like at airports, can load and unload significant numbers without attendants, I see no reason that gondola could not follow suit.

You also ask if if it can switch cars from line 1 to line 2 without anyone present for safety or other reasons.
Again, I see no reason why not. When the cabin detaches from the haul cable, it's automatically switched itself from cable to guideway. This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icXHfnw-gaw shows the bike riding a wire for straightaways and seamlessly switching to guideway for curves. I can't think of a reason why (on guideway) it could not emulate suspended PRT and switch to its hearts content.

For me, the major issues with gondola lie in no HVAC and in the fact that, like a subway system, to move even one person, the whole system must be fired up, while if cabins were individually powered and directed by computer, problem solved.
