Dear friends and colleagues,

I’m writing to invite you to a visit to the Société Haïtienne d'Histoire et de Géographie et Géologie tomorrow at 2 PM. Located just a few blocks from the Marriott, the SHHGG is the oldest intellectual society in the Caribbean (92 years old!) and continues to publish some of the best scholarship on Haiti in its review.  Over its long life, it has been an intellectual home to luminaries such as Jean Price Mars, Dantès Bellegarde, Hénock Trouillot, Roger Gaillard, Suzy Castor and Georges Corvington.

The President of the Société, Pierre Buteau, and its members, would like to take advantage of the CSA to meet visiting scholars and share a bit about the academic work being produced here in Haiti. I think this invitation offers a great opportunity to build more bridges between Haitian and international intellectual communities.

If you are interested in joining us, please meet me and Lewis Clormeus in the Marriott lobby at 1:45 PM so we can walk over together. Also, please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested (most of you are folks I know directly or over Twitter ;-) )

If you want to learn more about the Société, check out this article in the Nouvelliste!

    Cheers,
       Claire Payton

An American/Haitian family is offering a room for rent this July and August in Pacot in Port-au-Prince. This is the city's pleasantist neighborhood, with lots of trees. It would be a good chance for someone working, studying, volunteering, or just wanting to improve their Creole. The room is comfortable and comes with a private bathroom, two meals a day, housekeeping and laundry, reliable electricity, water and Wi-Fi. The guest would share living room, porch and garden with the small family. It is available by the month at $1000 for an individual and $1400 for a couple. Owner will check references. If interested, please contact Anne Fuller: affu...@yahoo.com
