Dear Ninna,

Good morning. I hope this message finds you well. I apologize for the inordinate delay of my response. Classes, a search committee, travel, administrative duties, and off-campus community have made the last 5 weeks chaotic, causing a severe backlog in my email correspondence. I appreciate the copy of your chapter, which strikes me as a key source for the subject of deportation which is likely to become a dominant focus in the study of the mobility of people in our hemisphere.

I don't know if you still need the reference that prompted your message since, I suppose, you're no longer on Dominican soil. But, for matters transnational and Hispaniola-related, I would recommend the scholarly networks galvanizing around the cadres convened electronically by April Mayes and Kiran Jarayam, whom I am copying on this message.

Apart from that, I need to wait some more days to be able to confirm attendance to the LASA Congress in NYC. If I do, I would love to meet with you. Be well. Regards,

Silvio

Dear Silvio,
I hope this e-mail finds you and that you are doing well. It’s been a while since our last encuentro. I am currently on a short visit to the Dominican Republic, looking into the local academic interest in Dominican international migration. I find that the local market for migration studies primarily is preoccupied by Dominico-Haitian relations, which is of course important and relevant. I have talked to people at FLACSO, OBMICA, the National Institute of Migration and a few of the usual suspects (Wilfredo Lozano, Franc Báez), but found no contemporary research in Dominicans abroad. That is of course in itself relevant information. However, I wonder whether you have any knowledge of local researchers looking into Dominican International/transnational migration. People I should talk to at the universities. NGOs working with migration or deportation issues. If so, I would be grateful for any contact information. I will be here until February 19.
On another note: Would you be attending the LASA meeting in New York in late May? If so, I hope we can meet and talk.
I attach my latest publication involving Dominican migration and send warm regards, Ninna

Hello All,

Very briefly--

The SJRM does have a presence in the DR through Centro Bonó, located on Josefa Brea in Maria Auxiliadora. Fr. Mario (Moreno) Serrano Marte directs the Center and may be able to direct you regarding contemporary Dominican transnational migration.

Lorgia Garcia Pena, at Harvard, is working on Dominican migration to Italy.

April

Hi all,

I also work on the Haiti side of this puzzle, but if the Jesuit Service for Migrants has a presence in the DR, they will probably be quite informed. Please check their website or contact the Director of their main office in Haiti, M. Antoine: lant...@jesuites.org or lisan...@hotmail.com. Best,

Stephen

Dear All,

I am glad that Prof. Sørensen had an opportunity to talk with people in the DR and with Dr. Mayes virtually.  I look forward to meeting face to face.

I hope you had a chance to speak with people at IOM and perhaps the Archivo General de la Nacion for possible leads within historical sources.  Although I do not know how far she has developed her work, Dr. Cruz Bueno (SUNY New Paltz) was beginning to look at Dominican migration to Spain.

I hope this helps, and good luck with your work.

I apologize for my delayed response. I have been working for three years now on a project in which I look at Dominicans in Europe. I am concentrating on three cities: Barcerlona, Milan and Amsterdam and my focus is on second generation dominicanos.  I would be happy to share numbers with you. I do not know who is working on this topic on the island but there are a few of us in the US and Europe. Best,

Hello everyone. Sorry to reply so late.

I am writing a book about Dominican migration to Switzerland right now.

This is part of a larger project comparing Dominican migration to the US and Europe.

Please let me know how I could be of help.

Thank you!
