As an attempt to meaningfully respond to the current events, the Journal of Literary Multilingualism in collaboration with LangueFlow, is organizing a series of small online roundtables on multilingual literature in conflict zones: see the info below and in the attachment.  

Because of its innovative collaborative format, the discussants will have to be invited (two per session). Please query us (emails below) to express your interest and your literary topic. We will go from there.

February 2022, three days into the war.

 

 Zones of conflict are often at the center of multilingual creativity, since writers themselves are often in the midst of wars and migration chaos, undergoing hardships and trauma.

 

How are wars, ethnic clashes, and local or global crises depicted in translingual texts? How does translingual writing, in different genres, reflect war zone traumas and deal with language choice? We can ponder these and other questions as a community of scholars of literary multilingualism, as we mourn the loss of life and the humanitarian catastrophe in the Middle East, in Ukraine, and elsewhere in the world.

 

We propose a series of online roundtables in which we will use an innovative format to kindle scholars’ imagination in interdisciplinary collaboration. We invite proposals for discussions about literary texts by multilingual authors from or about a conflict zone.

 

Each roundtable (~1 hour 15 minutes total) will consist of two discussants who will prepare their topics for discussion collaboratively, 15 minutes of introduction per topic + ~45 minutes discussion for both.

 

The suggested topics can be based on published articles or chapters or be completely new. We hope to collect the latter to be published in a special thematic JLM issue ‘Multilingual Literature in Conflict Zones’.
