Witaj Kamil,Jadwiga has passed on to me the information about your Polish Transition initiative. Well done! This is an important step in the right direction.I am familiar with the the UK transition movement and have visited Totnes on more than one occasion. It is, as you know, spreading rapidly and also internationally. However I think there are some things that have not moved forward as one might have wished. The main one, in my view, is the lack of contact with local farms/farmers.This leaves a hole in the potential of the transition movement. New initiatives to support local farmers who are loosing their markets are an essential component of anycommunity based 'greening' initiative. Without this, it is unlikely that much genuine progress on the food and farming front can be made.
Therefore, I would recommend that the Polish initiative should incorporate, from the beginning, a commitment to work out ways of shortening the food chain and linkingconsumers to producers at the community level. That is, farmers who are committed to good standards and eclogical awareness. One such way might be to initiate a farmers support group who would 'contract' local farmers to grow a percentage of their food for them. This would guarantee the farmer a steady income and the buyer fresh, local and seasonal foods. It aslo means that money would circulate within the local rural economy - a key factor in 'growing a community'. With no middle man and the supermarkets left out of the equation, it is possible to maximise the value for money of local foods.
