What it is?PLACE is a public-serving, experiential learning center showcasing and fostering sustainable living practices, regenerative design, urban homesteading, community resiliency, preparedness, social justice, artistic expression and neighborhood placemaking. Our goal is to incubate a local sustainability hub to allow people to see solutions in practice, to gain access to the knowledge and resources to empower them to take action in their own lives, neighborhoods, towns, cities and bio-regions. In addition to classes, workshops, skillshares and public events, PLACE features the Makery, a shared art space and the Fab Lab – an appropriate technology fabrication shared shop space.

Education StewardEducation Steward manages, plans, and promotes classes on permaculture, herbalism, DIY living, art, social justice, homesteading skills and more.
Shared maker spaces at PLACE:FAB LABAnother space onsite known as the Fab Lab, which is dedicated to folks working in the realm of environmentally friendly sustainable design and appropriate technology. From bike builder to rocket stove makers, gasifier to methane digester, the Fab Lab is an incubator for new ideas in a solutionary future. The space is better suited for metal and wood working, soldering, custom bike frame & trailer fabrication. We have shared equipment including a welder, chop saw, band saw, drill press and several hand tools.
the MakeryA space for eco artists interested in a co-working environment and shared art making studio. Join other sewers, print maker, jeweler, painters, or other crafters with eco consciousness in their approach, materials, and methods. The room has some shared tools, supplies and a variety of sewing machines.
The NeighborhoodWe are located in Oakland's Golden Gate district at 1121 64th Street and Marshall Street, half a block from San Pablo Ave and a block south of Alcatraz Ave. We are a 20 min walk from Ashby BART or a 15 minute free shuttle bus from MacArthur BART. PLACE is equidistant from Ashby and Powell exits off the I-80. We are a block away from the Actual Cafe, Victory Burger, A Verb for Keeping Warm(yarn, fabric, and fiber shop) and James and the Giant Cupcake. The Donut Farm, Tribu, Ruby’s and Farley’s are the other cafes within walking distance as is Urban Ore salvage yard, Ashby Lumber, Ashby Plumbing, MacBeath Hardwoods, Discount Fabrics, and Berkeley Bowl WEST.
