Just to remind you all that the first four of our green open homes are
opening this weekend. Admission is free but booking is advisable. Just
e-mail me back if you fancy any of these and I'll arrange a tour for
you:
Oakdean, Dean Lane,Cookham Dean:
Thisnew build, award winning house is an efficient eco-friendly
construction that exceeds level 5 of the Government’s Code for
Sustainable Homes.
The house structure is built of sustainable materials and contains no
harmful toxins, waxes or lacquers.
The walls are constructed of wood and are 37cm thick. Wood shavings
treated with soda and whey soda are used for insulation and a fire
retardant. The walls have a U value of between 0.13 and 0.16 W/m2K
compared with a non-insulated cavity brick wall of 1.5 W/m2K and an
insulated wall of 0.3 W/m2K.
The windows are tripled glazed and have a U value of 0.8 W/m2K
compared to conventional double glazing which is 2.8 W/m2K. The
glazing is concentrated on the south side of the building to take
advantage of solar gain. The windows all have external shutters or
blinds which can be used to prevent too much solar gain.
Air is taken in and out of the house by a number of centrally
controlled heat exchangers. The house is effectively air tight so
cannot have any openings such as letter boxes and cat flaps.
Other eco features of the house include rain water capture and low
energy LED lighting. There is a hot water circulation system which
moves the hot water slowly around the system so there is no waste
water from running taps to get a hot flow. The walls and roof also
have a covering to eliminate potential harmful electromagnetic
radiation.
The result is the house uses approximately 40kWh/m2 per year compared
to the typical UK house which uses approximately 250kWh/m2 per year.
The house also has a constant ambient temperature in all rooms and
healthy air flow.
Lea Barn,Winter HillMaidenhead
Award winning upgraded house and barns dating from 17th century. Solar
panels. Timber frame extension to barn with flint footings, including
wattle and daub panels and lime plaster made using lime from
Pinkneys Green slaked in the garden. Reed bed sewage system that
deals with all the waste from the house and barns. (Sun 11th only).
Tea with delicious home made cakes will be served in the barn.
35, Gorse Rd., Cookham Rise
1960's house retrofitted with cavity wall and loft insulation .
Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Insulating blinds.(Sun 18th
