“O Captain, My Captain” by Walt Whitman is about President Lincoln at the end of the U.S civil war. But the poem not directs reference to Lincoln and America. The poem is using some Figurative language to finish; they are metaphor personality and synecdoche. The metaphor is use ship to compare the America and captain to compare Lincoln. It has three stanzas. First one about when the war is over, people are cheering, but the bad news is come that captain was dead. They feel sad, the news is hurt their heart. Poet calls”Captain, my captain”, it means the people who in the ship to express the feeling warm and loved to the captain. ”the ship has weather’s every rack, the prize we sought is worn” this sentence is using the synecdoche; it is the ship stand for a country. Second one is describe the successful return of the scene is very spectacular. “Rise—up for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills”, and the poet call captain to father “Here, Captain! Dear father,” it means the people have more profound feeling to captain and they are closer to captain. “it is some dream that on the deck”here using the personality , the dream is not a person ,it does not have food to stand in the deck. Third one tell me the poet is hopeless and sorrowful. “My captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still” this sentence using captain stand for Lincoln to clearly tell us, he was dead. The poem uses the metaphor to compare the president Lincoln in the Civil war. Lincoln control the America like the captain driving well. So, the poet through the poem to tell us the America win in the civil war, because of Lincoln is a good leadership. And through the figurative language let me easier to know poet‘s feeling that he is very respect Lincoln and he feel grief for president’s dead.
The poem always used a lot of different kinds of figurative language to help readers easier to understand the poem. The poem “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman figurative language also used. The poem is basing on the background of the U.S Civil War. The civil war is end. Walt Whitman relied on most often in the poem “O Captain! My Captain” is metaphor. Line 1 “our fearful trip is done.” Here is one example of metaphor. The poet compares the Civil War to the fearful trip, and this line tells us the civil war is done. Line 4 “the vessel grim and daring:” Here is the example of the personification, reveals people’s feeling when the war almost done. In second stanza line13 “Here Captain! Dear father!” here is the other example of the metaphor. President Lincoln likes the father of the country. In people’s hearts Lincoln is great president just like a hero. Line 15 “It is some dream that on the deck.” This is the example of hyperbole. The dream is impossible on the deck this sentence represent the killer plans to kill the president. Line 20 “From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won” here is the example of metaphor and personification. The victor ship represents the country won in the civil war. The war is done but Lincoln also dead. In first and last stanzas,"Falen cold and dead."repeat again and again. This sentence reveals the president Lincoln was dead. All those figurative language used help me easier to understand the poem. The message of this poem is Lincoln is a great president and he also is a hero in the United States of America history. People all feel sad of Lincoln’s death.
