From its stunning eight-minute opening shot of a massive factory where a
small army of workers assiduously go about their assigned tasks, to the
remarkable documentation of China's
Three Gorges Dam, Manufactured Landscapes is an impressive experience. That's
partly due to the size and space of the landscapes, but mostly because of the
beauty of the images of industrial landscapes.
Director Jennifer Baichwal follows celebrated Canadian photographer and artist
Edward Burtynsky on a tour of Asia. Burtynsky
takes large-format stills of industrial landscapes: factory workers lined up to
infinity, giant ships eviscerated, massive recycling dumps, expansive strip
mines. His goal is to portray humanity's relationship to nature as we pursue
progress. His images are striking and picturesque, leaving viewers on their own
to comprehend the negative global ramifications.
Many of Burtynsky's photographs reveal human beings dwarfed by the
massive industrialized landscape that surrounds them. The film sheds light on
the tedium and monotony suffered by workers who are assigned small components
of huge manufacturing processes, and must endure the repetitive work that it
entails.
This award winning film doesn’t just document the monumental changes brought about by industrialization and modernization, but attempts to spotlight the artist’s chronicle of these events through his photos which offer a sense of the immense cost this current industrial revolution is having on the natural world.
Its surface is beautiful, its implications frightening, Manufactured Landscapes powerfully shifts our consciousness about environmental change without judgment or resolution. It captures a brave new world that manages to be both luscious and repellent, often simultaneously.
