10.15am Food & Nutrition – Different perspectives on food and
nutrition featuring Sherry Elton talking about why our good healthy gut bugs leave home. How we can
improve our gut bugs to improve our digestion, health, immune system and feel
good hormones; and the Invercargill Vegan Society will share details about
Veganism in our region. Vegans live without harming or killing animals
and enjoy sharing fantastic recipes.
11am Southland Steiner Playgroup aims to
provide a sense of community and nourishment for families with young
children. One of the founding members of the group will discuss how it
was established and the philosophy behind the playgroup including its
emphasis on rhythm, nature, free play and creativity.

12.15 pm Wormfarming and Composting –
Judith Madden talks about wormfarms and compost systems for the home garden.
1pm DIY Composting Toilet – Phil Orr
gives a step by step guide to building a DIY composting toilet and how it works
as well as outlining how commercial systems work.
1.30pm Urban
self-sufficiency – Rick Butler talks about the
process of change his family has gone through over the last 2 years - from
digging out some lawn to grow some veggies and getting some chooks, to
wondering just how productive a sixth of an acre can be. This backyard gardener
now has Veggies, chooks, dairy goats, honey bees and fruit trees all on his
urban section.
2.15pm Everyday
gardening – this panel of ordinary gardeners talk about how they grow gardens
in this Southern climate including making a glasshouse from old windows, being
part of a community garden, gardening without animal products ie manure,
companion planting and more.
3pm Eco Friendly Home
DIY – Keiron O’Connell Eco Advisor for the
Invercargill City Council, Phil Orr local Architectural Designer and Nathan
Surendran heating engineer give you tips on things you can do to make your home
more eco friendly at little cost including creating solar gain, insulating your
home and ventilation.
