Dear All
This short extract from Sustainable Pulse’s message of 27 June refers to
something I suppose few of us knew about -- that the phosphate ore needed to
produce glyphosate is actually mined, very destructively, from mountain tops,
and that a new site is now needed nearby to keep the supply going. An
application to allow that is now being considered by the US Bureau of Land
Management. Considerable environmental damage will result, not least to Native
American lives as they depend on the land and its wildlife. A short extract from
that piece can be found here --
“From the cradle to the
grave, glyphosate is deeply problematic,” said Hannah Connor, a senior attorney
at the Center for Biological Diversity, which has submitted critical comments to
the BLM on the project and is considering legal action. “The environmental costs
begin with open-pit mines that destroy hundreds of acres of habitat critical to
the survival of imperiled species and end with a pesticide that harms wildlife
and people. It’s pretty disturbing.”
Best wishes
