You may have received an email from Carolyn Stayton of Transition US looking for a midwest site to host Rob Hopkins on his upcoming U.S. trip this October.  The email made no mention of LA because we have already had our hat in the ring for some time.  Transition US is still ironing out itinerary, but it looks likely that we will get to host Rob.

I am putting together a team who can organize what will happen when Rob arrives. If you are interested in being on the team, am polling people for their availablity for a conference call this coming week to discuss options for the L.A. aspect of Rob's trip. Please let me know which work for you:
*** Monday 7/15, 11am <<(current front-runner times)
***Tues 7/16, 11am <<(current front-runner times)
***Tues 7/16, 1pm
*** Thurs 7/18, 11am
***Fri 7/19, 10:30am
***Fri 7/19, 12:30pm in person at the Learning Garden lunch

If we pick one of the non-TLG times, I will do the call on a conference call technology so that it will be recorded and people who have to miss can catch up with the recording.

Here are the ideas that are floating around and I'll share further details when we get together ...
  • tentative dates for L.A. are looking like Sun am 10/13 through Tues am 10/15.  Carolyn pointed out that Mon 10/14 is a minor "holiday" for some people.
  • Looks like the Bay Area is taking the Fri/Sat slots (yes, I am disappointed) because they have a permaculture convergence at that time.
  • if we do get Rob Sun-Mon, the huge public event will have to be on Sunday evening
  • i need to hear from the team if doing a second large public event on Monday evening is a viable idea, or if it is pointless
  • we need to be mindful of the fact that Rob may not be able to hammer through a tough schedule, he may need some "down time" (anyone up for taking him to the beach on Monday?)
  • we need a team discussion about what to do about serving Westside vs. NELA crowds.  Also we need to be mindful of Santa Barbara, Ojai, Orange County, Joshua Tree, San Diego all of which will prob be coming to see Rob too.
  • another idea Carolyn floated was finding a University venue ... the possiblity comes to my mind of trying to pull something together with Cal Poly Pomona on Monday (Elektra has tons of contacts to make it happen)  I do not have any UCLA/USC contacts - does anyone have contacts in universities that are central and where a core of professors "gets" this stuff?  But we also have to weigh that if anyone is taking a "holiday" on that monday it will be schools.
  • possiblity that Post Carbon Institute may get involved.  They have found venues for Heinberg so they might have UCLA-type inroads.  If the big gathering takes place in a venue like that it will have vastly different flavor and character.
  • discussion on this team needs to be brainstorming how to cope with a Sunday/Monday possibility
  • Carolyn anticipates decisions will be made about itinerary within a week or so
  • we need to have some L.A. ideas in place.  And I cannot make all these decisions alone, I need your help!!!
Please let me know what times work for you in getting the team together to talk.

Hello, group -

I've sat in on two of these conference calls to date, and participated in the search for potential venues and meeting sites. At one point, they were considering TreePeople or somewhere here in the Valley. It appears now as if Rob Hopkins will be in Los Angeles for two days, arriving at LAX on Sunday, October 13, where he will be speaking at a Westside church, and then traveling to Pasadena on Monday the 14th, where he will speak at Throop Church, hosted by the Pasadena Transition group and Arroyo Time Bank. He'll be leaving town on Tuesday, the 15th.

If you would like to participate in a smaller private gathering on the Westside with other Transition leaders before the public event on Sunday, let me know.

I know, I know: this begs the question - are we still a Transition Initiative? Maybe this event will answer the question for us. I'll try to keep you informed as the planning firms up, and - certainly - if anyone else wants to be a part of this, please speak up.

Bruce

Hello Bruce,   Thanks for the email. Yes, Mitzi and I would like to attend a small private gathering prior to the public events. Keep us posted.
Thanks, much
Jon
