I wanted to post this to the TSFV Open Space list, but apparently it no longer exists. Anyway, for those interested parties who can still be reached:

Friday, October 2 7:00pm Toby Hemenway Booksigning and Talk
The Shed
1355 Lincoln Ave, Pasadena, California 91105

We are excited to announce the release of Toby Hemenway's latest book, The Permaculture City. This book documents the rise of a new sophistication, depth, and diversity in the approaches and thinking of permaculture designers and practitioners. Understanding nature can do more than improve how we grow, make, or consume things; it can also teach us how to cooperate, make decisions, and arrive at good solutions.

As Hemenway demonstrates in The Permaculture City, urban permaculture is about much more than gardening in the city. Permaculture’s ethics lead us on a path to ecologically and socially sound decisions. Its principles encourage us to think like an ecosystem: solution-based and enhancing diversity, resilience, productivity, and interconnectedness while encouraging the lean use of resources.

Toby will be giving a presentation and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Hi Bruce and all,

Interesting synchronicity; I've been reading the book (as an eBook), and loving it.  It's really good to see the permaculture concepts applied to other complex systems.  I'm not sure I can make it,  but I'd like to.  Thanks for the heads-up.

While I have your attention, is there any interest in getting together again soon?

Regards,
Don

One more event coming up: Diana Leafe Christian on "3 Aspects of a Healthy Thriving Community" on Monday 10//5, at 6700 W. 83rd, Westchester/Los Angeles 90045, 7-9PM.  The blurb:

------------------------------
Diana Leafe Christian has been part of intentional communities, group living, and ecovillages for more than two decades.

Recently, she has been working with a community governance and decision-making method called Sociocracy. It means "governance by peers and colleagues," and it uses feedback loops to help an organization continuously improve.

Come meet Diana Leafe Christian and discover ...
* How do you create "community glue," to generate feelings of gratitude and trust?
* What are good process and communication skills?
* How do you set up effective project management?

If you are curious about intentional communities, and wonder what they are like and whether they might work for you -- you can bring those questions too!

Diana Leafe Christian is the author of Finding Community: How to Join an Ecovillage or Intentional Community and Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities. We hope to have these books available for purchase and signing at the talk.
-----------------

(I think Hemenway's book mentions her, and I know he briefly discusses Sociocracy.)

Hello Bruce, Don and Bill and others reading this.
Thanks for the notice.  Mitzi and I will be going to The Shed and prior to that invite you to join us at Mijares Mexican Restaurant  145 W. Palmetto in Pasadena, around 5:45pm. It's west of Fair Oaks Avenue and south of Del Mar. It's been the best Mexican Restaurant in Pasadena for 100 years.
Jon y Mitzi..

Jon, Mitzi, and all,

Yes, I'd like to join you for dinner.  What's the parking like around there?

Don, As I remember (it's been a few years) there's a parking lot for the restaurant. it's not a heavily trafficked area, anyway.
look forward to seeing you
Jon

Toby Hemenway is a very informative speaker who covered a lot of ground in an hour. Too much, in fact. The takeaway, for me, Toby is a really good human being with much to share -- we bought his latest book which Mitzi is now reading.
Part B (which occurred first) dinner in the patio at Mijares -- muy  excelentess attended by Bruce, Don, Mitzi and me. Margaritas in enormous glasses, guacamole made at the table, chicken fajitas . . well, you get the picture.
Embrazos,
Juan

Bill,

So how was it?

I'll go with Jon's assessment.  It was a very pleasant evening, although I missed the rest of the old gang.  I've been reading Permaculture City online, and it does illustrate many applications of the principles.  There's material in there that could be useful for Transition groups.  (I picked up a hardcopy there as well.)

Noticed your website, and the (first of many?) book announcement.  I look forward to reading it.  (By the way, I can have some empathy; my sister, Toni Dwiggins, began a late-in-life writing career a few years ago, and has had some mild success with a series of murder mystery stories about a pair of forensic geologists.  Fortunately, she doesn't have to make a living at it, being married to a man with a lifetime career in engineering.)

I don't know if The Archdruid is on your reading list, but if you're interested in writing short stories set in post-peak-oil America, you can submit an entry in one of his periodic collections, under the series name "After Oil"; I think entries are still open for the 4th book in the series.  Speaking of JMG, having noticed the spiritual/magical cast to ShadowPath, it occurs to me that you might be interested in his other blog, The Well of Galabes (galabes.blogspot.com).

Finally, an interesting site I stumbled on, that might hold some relevance for you: http://ipwebdev.com/hermit/twbhp.html.

Best regards,
Don
