Quick question: does anybody know somebody who has expertise on modern windmills? The sweat lodge community I'm part of is considering some wind generation at their location in Ojai but lack the expertise to know if it's worthwhile or feasible.

Any leads would be welcome!

Thank you!

Respectfully,

Bill

Bill,  Google knows all. Google:  Home wind power.   Mother Earth News article covers the basics.  A tower of 35 to 50 feet in height is usually necessary and often causes local zoning difficulties.

Hi Bill,
Here is a link to a low-profile model and company (Real Goods) that I recommended for a friend of mine who has a home in windy Sylmar.  http://realgoods.com/solar/wind-turbines     He was not able to get it due to the homeowner association guidelines where he lives. However, there are so many different types of wind turbines available. Please see the links below for different types of wind turbines.

One option is the horizontal wind turbine. This Google images search link may prove to be helpful. If the sweat lodge group likes a particular design, they can click on the image and proceed to the company's website for more info.

Vertical wind turbines are another option. I visited this vertical wind turbine (see pic) during an eco-home tour in 2004 at a private residence in Sylmar. It has been generating since 1983 as a co-gen project with LADWP. The contact info I had for the turbine owner - Ivan Forbes (818) 361-3444

Here is a Google images search link for vertical wind turbines.

The new bladeless wind turbine technology seems to be just getting off the ground. At this point, it is very expensive. Some of the models take up a lot of room.  http://sheerwind.com/customers/product-line-2
