Background:

In August 2019, Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, his sister Ellisha Flagg-Garner, Constance Malcolm (mother of Ramarley Graham) and members of Communities United for Police Reform (including Loyda Colon/Justice Committee, Monifa Bandele/Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Mark Winston-Griffith/Brooklyn Movement Center, Kesi Foster/Make the Road NY and Joo-Hyun Kang/CPR) filed a petition to the NY Supreme Court demanding a judicial inquiry into the violation and neglect of duty by Mayor de Blasio, the Police Commissioner and others related to the killing of Eric and subsequent actions (incl we believe cover-up attempts). The city is trying to get the case dismissed.

Last August, former police officer Daniel Pantaleo, who put Mr. Garner in the chokehold, was finally fired from the NYPD after an escalated public campaign demanding his firing and that of all other officers who engaged in misconduct in Eric Garner's killing. While the firing of Pantaleo was certainly a victory for our movement, the work of holding the NYPD and the City of New York accountable for the killing of Eric Garner and the subsequent coverup is not finished. Other officers engaged in misconduct and we are supporting Eric's mother's call for them to be fired, including but not necessarily limited to: Officers Justin Damico, Craig Furlani and Mark Ramos; Lt Christopher "not a big deal" Bannon; and Sgt. Kizzy Adonis. To this day, Eric's mother and the public still don't have access to crucial information and records related to Eric's killing and what we believe to be subsequent cover-up attempts.
