The makers of The Long Shadow, both privileged daughters of the South haunted by their families' slave-owning pasts, expose how the South has exerted a powerful influence on the shaping of this country, establishing white privilege throughout our institutions, laws, culture and economy. The vicious consequences of this influence are felt to this day, and call on everyone to stand in solidarity with Black people. Democracy, in Ancient Greek, means a system of governance "by the people" (demos = ordinary people). And yet, while two thirds of Americans think the government should be doing more to address the climate crisis, the public will isn't being put into action. Instead, our democracy has slid into authoritarian oligarchy - an unjust system dominated by powerful lobbies, greedy corporations, and billionaires.
Extinction Rebellion's third demand addresses this crisis of democracy by calling for a Citizens' Assembly, a form of direct democracy that brings together a representative sample of the population (inclusive of non-citizens), presents them with an in-depth analysis of an issue, and guides them through the process of crafting bold solutions.
On Tuesday, July 21st at noon, Extinction Rebellion NYC - in partnership with Citizens' Climate Lobby DC and City Atlas - is hosting a live webinar where we'll discuss how Citizens’ Assemblies can help break through the political deadlock on climate action. Whether you are brand new to the Citizens' Assemblies world or already championing their efficacy in fueling momentum for policy change, this is a great opportunity to learn directly from deliberative democracy practitioners and researchers and get your questions answered.
