Saturday, May 7, 2011 10am – 2pm at The Plant located at 192 Lorax Lane in Pittsboro, NC

Join Catherine Adamson of Chapel Hill Bees LLC to explore the ins and outs of sustainable beekeeping. This workshop is ideal for those with no previous experience with bees or for hobbyists who want to explore a different way of keeping bees. All you need to bring with you is note-taking materials and your abundant curiosity about the complex world of the honey bee. Please wear full-length pants and long sleeves – lightweight is fine.

Catherine Adamson is the president and chief bee-wrangler of Chapel Hill Bees LLC.  She’s completely fascinated by the elegant collective behavior of honey bee colonies and, being a total geek, loves sharing bees with others.

Catherine will introduce you to the biology of honey bees and the behavior patterns of beekeepers, then cover the big problems currently challenging beekeepers worldwide – pests, pesticides, colony collapse disorder, and genetic diversity. As more research is done on these questions, the solutions are turning out to require mainly a change in beekeepers’ approach rather than new technological interventions. Catherine will also answer practical questions about how to start keeping bees at home without upsetting your neighbors.

The hands-on portion of the workshop will invite you to experience the zen of beekeeping and to become familiar with the tools and techniques beekeepers have at their disposal when handling bees and honey. An observation hive will allow attendees to get up close and personal with a working colony, and if weather permits we will open the hive and walk through a basic colony examination. Each participant will take home a section of fresh comb honey.

Class size is limited to 30 people ages 12 and older. Pre-registration and payment required. Register early to take advantage of the early bird price. Workshop price will increase to $45 April 30th.

$40 – workshop (bring your own lunch)
$50 – workshop plus a delicious sandwich from Chatham Marktplace

This workshop is part of The Abundance Foundation's do-it-yourself workshop series.  Proceeds help us support local self reliance in the form of local food, renewable energy and community.
