Hi folks,

Join us at Recyclique this Friday night June 22 from 6-8 pm for “Lessons for Durham from Cuba's urban agriculture movement,” a slide show and talk by Jeff Ensminger, director of NEEM, a non-profit that is applying Cuban innovations in new community gardens in East Durham. Cuban organic innovations helped feed the country after the collapse of their industrial agriculture following the fall of the Berlin Wall.  Their model has become world famous, and draws folks from all over to learn how it’s done.

Specials: This week come take advantage of 15% off any one item of furniture, clothing or a bag owned by the co-op which costs $5 or over.  Also, 10% off books on gardening, food or green lifestyles.  Students w/ ID (& our regular volunteers) get 10% off anytime.

New in the shop:  Upcycled toddler clothes by Millie and Kristina; New supply of wonderful-smelling Bella’s Natural Soaps, Also, we just snagged copies of two classic books: Natural Capitalism (by Hawkins, Lovins & Hunter) and Food Politics by Marion Nestle, and we have a new book section on Eastern and Indigenous wisdom.  Nathan Swanson is now running “Johnny Cool” Lamp Repair out of our shop – and promises great prices; you can chat with him and bring your broken lamps to the shop on Fridays.

Last weekend we had a great showing --about 19 folks --at the Global Gardener film on permaculture Friday night.  We were delayed getting underway due to technical glitches (w/ DVD drive and sound), but finally got our ducks in a row, and the discussion with Sarah Vroom from Bountiful Backyards was fabulous – lots of enthusiastic Q&A on methods for doing permaculture here in NC.

Makers Faire & Rain Barrels: Many thanks to folks who volunteered at our booth at Makers Faire Sat.  Imagine a large building at the fairgrounds filled with a riot of crafters, inventors, robot wars, steam punk, and packed with people!;  I came back early to manage a Living Social rain barrel workshop with two families who painted rain barrels. Those two and our “Wild Things” barrel sold, bringing the week’s total to four (4!) barrels!  Meanwhile Millie, Kristina and a troop of kids at Makers Faire produced a shockingly colorful flower barrel on a bright green background that is now in the shop.

Green Tracks Training with another cohort of Durham Economic Resource Center (DERC) students resumes next week at The Forest Foundation’s GOAL (Green Oil & Light) campus.  Participants from CommunEcos doing instruction include Sandy, Antonio, Max and Henry.  Themes for different days are on the attached flyer in case If anyone would like to attend you are welcome.

Get involved!: Are you interested in doing or promoting environmental education (or learning how)?  Are you an upcycler,  crafter or handy person who needs a friendly retail outlet?  Do you have small items or books to donate that fit our themes?  Want to volunteer to learn to run a retail shop or non-profit?  [vendors who volunteer regularly staffing shop or doing promotions work take home 70% of their sales, and our super volunteers can get higher %; we also have opportunities in rain barrel production (and painting), or other upcycler production on site]

Eno Festival:  The Eno Festival is coming up on Wed. July 4th, and Sat and Sun. July 7th and 8th. We will have four free tickets into the festival for each day to give out, first come, first serve, for volunteers who spend at least 3 hours at our booth, where we’ll invite folks to help paint rain barrels, do educational demos (w/ literature – topics open) and exhibit upcycled products.  We’ll have three shifts per day, in the morning 10 am – 1 pm, early afternoon from 1 pm – 4 pm, and late afternoon from 3:30 -6:30.   The morning shift on the 4th is taken.  Our booth is by the river in front of the River Stage, and we’ll be using our pop-up canopy.  Please email me at yikes....@gmail.com if you would like to reserve a volunteer slot.  I could use someone to help set up the canopy on Tuesday afternoon July 3rd.

Best,

Sandy
