Many thanks  Graham,

Re your  (below)       "have relegated to second place (behind the target of industrial competitiveness)   the EU's commitment to mitigating global warming."

For which we read    "have relegated to second place (behind international cooperation on unprecedented threat to survival of civilisation)  the EU's commitment to cherishing fragile ecosystems and  a happy future for their own species."

Are these people unwell?  Should we demand psychologists' health tests?  Why are we complicit, all of us , in allowing them to make genocidal policies?

How will they explain  the outcome of their policies to Dylan (8) to Ella (10)  to Katie (12) - winners of the  WWF's award, who were asking for clean energy from wind, waves and sun?   Are they happy  to show to their children the likely outcomes of their careless decisions   (eg in  Leo Murray's film mentioned below)?

Comments welcomed from policy makers now copied in.

PLEASE CONTINUE to harangue the EU on this disgraceful response to our planetary emergency. Planet awobble with carbon in the system. With bags full of dollars we'll all plummet over the carbon cliff.  Warnings: World Bank,  IEA, PriceWaterhouseCoopers  etc.

PLEASE  CONTINUE   to ask if people are happy to release methane hydrate bombs  over their kids' future.   James Hansen's here in UK to beg avoidance of tar sands: "game over" for climate.   Having to contend with ignoramuses.    LOW CARBON GROWTH 4% annually, economic winner.   Please ground long term moneypit toxic assets (filthy fossil)- warnings from Standard & Poor etc

PLEASE DEMAND   proper climate education  eg Leo Murray's eleven and a half min film (2008) available on YouTube.  WakeupFreakout......   STILL hopeful at the moment.  Please assure me you've seen it yourself.

Before cockroaches inherit the Earth.  Copying in others who are paying attention to the peer-reviewed science, ignoring billionaire disinformation/ cherry-picked data. Also copying in some policy makers.  I would ask that all become climate aware if they have the responsibility for making decisions on behalf of the rest of us.   Media ditto.

Banking crisis?  Preventable:   improvidential policies.    Folly bandwagon.  Nice suits, shame about the brains.

Death of civilisation?  Preventable:   ignoring science, carbon, feedback loops, ecosystems etc.    Fizzbangbiz gadgetclever policystupid

Please feel free to forward.   Happy to hear from Nigel Farage (don't have his email address).

      Best as ever,

Susan                                                       former believer in Homo Sapiens Sapiens

Subject: [grahamwatsonmep] Newsletter from the European Parliament, Friday 24 May 2013 - Sir Graham Watson MEP

Greetings

Having been dogged by a bad cough all week I am pleased it has been, for me at least, a relatively quiet one. Parliament met in Strasbourg for formal debates and votes, but none of the debates involved me directly.

The EU's main business of the week was in any case in Brussels, where our heads of state and government met at the European Council ('summit' in journalese). As I feared in last week's newsletter, they gave a boost to a common energy policy which will involve the widespread exploitation of the EU's reserves of shale gas and, while continuing to promote investment in renewable energy, have relegated to second place (behind the target of industrial competitiveness) the EU's commitment to mitigating global warming. They also agreed on a series of measures to crack down on tax evasion and VAT fraud including the automatic exchange of bank information from 2015.

The annual report on EU bathing water (seas, rivers and lakes) showed water quality continuing to improve and especially high in Cyprus and Luxembourg. Britain, the Netherlands and Belgium had the highest percentage of non-compliant sites, including 16 in my south west England constituency.

EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom (Sweden, LD) urged MEPs to set up an annual forum to examine Member States' policy on refugees. This follows a pilot project in 2010 and 2011 tracking the fate of 491 refugees from north Africa relocating from Malta to other EU countries, which MEPs wanted to make permanent but member states resisted. At present, all relocations are voluntary; and Germany is the country most generous in offering to take refugees.

In order to stay within budget in 2014 the European Commission announced it will propose a cut in direct aid payments to farmers. This would affect only farmers receiving more than 5000. Member states and MEPs look likely to back the proposal.

Among the many votes in Parliament this week we called for an annual check on member state laws likely to have an impact on press freedom; we approved new rules to make sure that people under protection orders (normally victims of stalking or other forms of harrassment or violence) will enjoy equivalent protection when travelling in other member states, and we voted to hold the EP elections next year between Thursday 22 May and Sunday 25 May (all countries vote on one of these weekdays). Parliament also called for more aid for refugees from Syria and (though Liberals voted for inclusion) for the exclusion of audio-visual services such as film making from negotiations on the proposed free trade agreement with the USA

If you know any company involved in eco-innovation and seeking help to bring products to market, 50% of the cost of doing so may be paid from the EU's eco-innovation programme. A total of 31.5 million is available in the current call for proposals; deadline for submissions is 5 September.

I am rarely in Brussels on the Friday of a Strasbourg week, but I am today because I am taking part in the presentation of Bristol's bid to be this year's EU Green Capital. We have made it to the finals for the third time and are up against Ljubljana, Glasgow and Brussels itself. I joined Mayor George Ferguson and his team last night for rehearsals.

Regards

Graham

I haven't got kids - & on aggregate it's a major part of the problem; why does just about everyone think it's their god given right to pop out as many of them as possible? on a planet of 7 billion with all the problems that we're facing? The only reason for exponential population growth has been cheap & abundant Oil; & when it's gone then the human numbers will go too.

I have very strong views on child raising & this current culture - Society isn't healthy; it's all sick to the bone; America is hell bent on pathologising & drugging everyone; & already has done with half it's children. This culture is largely abusive & unhealthy for children anyway - the UK is abysmal in it's overall treatment of children. Start with a long hard look at the realities of this current system & culture - all of it; the way we treat our unfortunates; the elderly, prisoners, the mentally ill, the homeless, drug addicts - see that all people are primarily human beings & start having a genuinely compassionate & caring society, instead of the utter joke that there currently is. As things stand we're moving daily back to right wing policies; as always happens during hard economic times. The UK population is no different to the population of pre war Germany - as a species we've learnt nothing!

Start addressing & raising awareness the real issues, or at least looking at them - the infinite economic growth paradigm (that is the main reasons this planet is being destroyed). Who looks at the economic system itself exactly, & seriously questions it all? It's hardly anyone. What about the current political systems, the current medical & scientific paradigms; based almost entirely on materialistic values; reductionism & determinism. Our systems have utterly failed - there is no economic, political, or religious solutions - they are the problems for gods sake! You can't fix it all, it's all broken beyond repair. We need a total paradigm shift in all areas of society, but I'm not sure that is going to be possible without collapse?

What to tell the children? How about 'we' have totally f*cked everything up, the mass media, politicians & every system in this current culture lies about everything & won't be able to sort any of it out. Sorry for bringing you into this World but I was selfish & wanted to live the dream of a Western Consumerist Nation, & conform to my social conditioning & biological urges, that we're going force onto you as well (whether you like it or not). Sorry but that's the way it all is.

Broken beyond repair?
Loads of heroism & activism around despite our admittedly woeful, selfish condition  & a greed culture that has been encouraged.  But there are tons of campaigns from caring people on my inbox.  From volunteers at Christchurch Hospital, or   climate-saving-chimney-climbers to that lovely lady Ingrid who stood up to that murderer of the young drummer, talking calmly to him.  Much decency & kindness around even if our dots aren't all joined up & money's being flung around by idiots who don't want to listen to the scary science.

All still to play for.  Shall send link to ask MPs to sign amendment to Energy Bill before 4th June so we can get clean green growth. Many are now pointing out that it's economic to invest in long-term projects & help each other.

Hansen is talking to his grandchildren about how to save a species of butterfly with a 4 generational turn round from Columbia(?) to Mexico.

Maybe there's a glorious future that awaits then?

It's all too complex, there are far too many variables & complexities involved in it all. & as your aware, I'm not even personally convinced of 'Global Warming' itself.

Who knows the future?
